Head spacers anyone?

A good buddy of mine has owned VWs for years and we were talking about how he wants to put together a turbo setup (which I am also casually thinking about), and the topic of head spacers came up. After he showed me some stuff and after I researched it a little it looks like the VW guys have been using them to lower their CR with good results for a while. I understand that a lot of VWs have iron blocks and other advantages, but I don't see why this couldn't work up to a certain point on the H22a4. They're not like an inch thick or anything, maybe .020" or .030", which seems reasonably sane and could give you at least a little bit lower CR. I can't really find anything on this or any other forums, so I wanted to pick anyone's brain who might have had some experience with 'em. Hope this starts a good thread.

if you wanna lower your compression the correct way, change out your pistons.

Using a different head gasket to lower your compression is like using a V-AFC and an FMU to tune a turbo car.

Do stuff right the first time.

Hey, just saying that it obviously is working pretty well for them, so seeing if anyone else tried it for our stuff, don't really have an opinion on the concept either way yet which is why I'm asking it here.

Yes, this is a very very old trick. It's a solution if you don't have the funds or ability to crack open the bottom end, but it will create problems down the road.
