Fuel pump install

When I popped the cover to the fuel pump, I was completely shocked by how dirty it was

The fuel pump IS located on the outside of the vehicle, so I guess it makes sense that being exposed to the underside, it's gonna get dirty.

Oh well, just wasn't expecting that. Now I have to clean that WHOLE area BEFORE I unbolt the pump Anyone else get surprised or am I just a nub?

I've never done the pump install.

How's the install going now?

Fuel pump is done

BUT I'M LEAKING AT THE FUEL RAIL!!!
Just pressurized the system and I've got a tiny leak in the top of the fuel rail banjo fitting. Looks like the leak is at the seal between the washer and fuel rail. I installed the larger washer on the bottom just as instructed I torqued it to 16 ft lbs (per Helms), saw the leak and wrenched it some more...still leaking.

All the washers look flat, nothing looks out of alignment and the banjo fitting has plenty of clearance without hitting anything.

Any ideas?

Edit: Shark, I just read your thread about this problem you had too. I'm going to first check for clearance to see if its the lip on the rail (like yours). If not, I'll try even more torque...just worried about applying too much. Maybe I should just take it appart and do it again.

For me it was a matter of tightening it down until it stopped leaking. As long as you are using the bottom washer supplied by JR, that tab on the banjo shouldn't be a problem. I was really concerned about overtightening it. I went into the house, and my dad gave a good tug on it behind my back and it stopped leaking. I have no idea how tight it is, but it's alot tighter than the 16 ftlbs called for in the Helm.

Best educated guess on how tight I can go?

Leak fixed I stacked 3 new Honda washers on the bottom and 1 for the top, torqued to 20 ft lbs. The new Honda crush washers were copper and much nicer than the JR crap. I noticed a difference right away when I started to tighten up the banjo cap nut...the new Honda washers felt like they were crushing (and sealing) but the JR crap didn't. Fvck JR

All fuel lines are good to go... no leaks at the pump, filter or fuel rail.

Next step is power steering, then on to the fun stuff.

Yeah, my impatient buddy said... "Pull that thing and will clean it after its out". I said... "Are you kidding me?, HELL NO!!! We clean it BEFORE it comes out".

Man, I clean every damn part of my car when I'm doing work in that area. When my buddy helped me with the IM removal/install, he said that he has never worked on any car before where your hands don't get dirty. He actually said it was pretty nice and wished he kept his engine as clean. All my car friends think I have issues
