Engine build list

Anything else you guys can suggest for building the engine? I mean things to replace while the block is out. Going with GE, JE pistons, and Eagle rods.

ARP head studs, water pump, accessory belts, timing belt, head gasket, exhaust gasket, new bearings, 3bar map sensor.......

billy (71dsp) posted this list a while back :

head gasket
head bolts
timing belt
timing belt tensioner
rod bearings
main bearings
main cap bolts
water pump
oil pump
valve cover gasket
vtec solenoid gasket
intake manifold gaskets
exhaust manifold gasket
oil pan gasket
cam seals
driveshaft seals
oil control orfice o-rings
misc. crush washers around the engine
front and rear main seals

to that i would say that some of the bottom end bolts are not really necessary, add the balance shaft belt, and the usual really dumb stuff : fuel filter, oil filter, crush washer on the fuel rail, etc.

a few of the gaskets on the oil pump side are hard to get if you don't get a new oil pump. the "rebuild bottom end gasket kit" doesn't include them.

in my personal opinion, ABSOLUTELY do the timing and balance shaft belts, the seals everywhere, the bearings, the autotensioner, gaskets, head bolts, and water pump. beyond that it's just good insurance.

for those of you who have said "i can rebuild my motor for $ xxx" or "it doesn't cost $ xxx" to rebuild a motor, here's how much a partial list of that **** costs from the cheapest vendor i know of :

Code:
head bolts 5.83	10	58.3
timing belt 47.87	1	47.87
timing belt tensioner 110.94	1	110.94
balancer belt 31.42	1	31.42
rod bearings 9.7	8	77.6
thrust bearing 8.34	1	8.34
main bearings 8.09	8	64.72
main cap bolts 3.47	10	34.7
water pump 89.02	1	89.02
oil pump 130.6	1	130.6
vtec solenoid gasket 10.98	1	10.98
oil pan gasket 2.09	1	2.09
cam seals 4.04	2	8.08
rear seal 10.43	1	10.43
timing cover seals	26.66	1	26.66
			1.96	2	3.92
			7.04	1	7.04
			4.98	1	4.98
			8.24	1	8.24
top end gasket kit	154.32	1	154.32
valve cover gasket 0
intake manifold gaskets 0
exhaust manifold gasket 0
head gasket 0
bottom end gasket kit	28.24	1	28.24

Wow, it adds up so fast. And that is not including pistons, rods, sleeves, labor....

Holy crap I thought it would be more like $500. Had the timing belt and water pump done about 5 months ago too. I guess I need to do them over again. Well at least the GE, pistons, and rods are paid for......

Edit: Thanks for this complete list. It'll help quite a bit.

right. throw in at least another two grand for sleeving and boring and honing and pistons and rings and rods and then another 1500 in labor to pull it out and put it back in.

anubyss : it's not a complete list, but it's most of it. oil filter, fuel filter maybe another 50 bucks worth of gaskets and crush washers and so on.
