educate me plz...

ok well i got my car retuned since i wasnt able to boost past 6k rpm's. the car would just bog out, kinda felt like i hit the rev limiter.

the tuner said it was due to the gap on my plugs and running too rich..(due to larger dp and piping)

ive been using the zfr7f-11 plugs which i believe are gapped at .039 out of the box. ive never adjusted the gap on them.

he had gapped them to .025 and leaned the a/f ratio...now the car is running strong again. the problem im havin now the car stalls frequently when putting in neutral...the rpm's drop so low the engine stalls out.

does the gap size make this much of an impact.. .039 to .025? (causing car to bog at higher rpms) and why or how is this caused? would new plugs and an ignition help the stalling out problems...or is an unrelated cause? please fill me in here..

thanks!
tyson

Id take it back to the tuner and tell him to bump the idle up a bit
if theyre a good shop they will do it for free

how big of a difference does gapping the spark plugs make? how do you figure out whats "ideal"?

Start at 28 and keep extending the gap until the car misfires under heavy load. Then back up a little.

wow. that a pretty small gap. you need like .32. it's not that hard to bump up the idle yourself, just get a flathead screw driver and adjust the idle screw on your t/b.

ive done that before, but ive heard that is like a "quick fix". kinda like puttin a bandaid on a huge gash.

also the idle itself is ok....it idles around 900 rpm's....but its just the inital drop goes down to about 100rpm or less, then goes up to 900 and levels off. i thought the hondata has an idle adjuster...??

Yes, it is a very small gap. When you combine a weak spark with high combustion chamber pressures you sometimes need to shorten the gap to ensure spark.

If I read your post correctly you just prescribed a gap of 32 for everyone. That is bad advice. Every engine setup is going to need (or be able to tolerate) a different gap. It is kind of like telling someone they need to eat 1 sandwich a day to achieve proper nutrition….. Everyone needs what they need, there is no set amount.

If one person has a “tired Coil with a “tired ignition module and old wires they may not be able to deliver the same spark power as another person. The correct way to address that situation is to freshen up the ignition system, but a quick fix is to shorten up the gap.

Another person (such as myself) with an MSD Digital 6+, HVCII coil, Good wires, etc. can tolerate a much larger gap. I actually run 48 on my plugs without a hint of misfiring.

The idea is to start out with a very small gap that (could) hinder power but will definitely transfer spark. Then, once you have a baseline, keep opening up the gap until you reach your personal threshold where your personal ignition system can no longer keep up.

Back when we all had the same boring stock prelude, we could share absolute advice with static numbers. Now that we have all taken different directions and our motors are in extremely different states of tune, we need to take that into account when offering advice.

32 is a very small gap btw. And nobody asked what type of plug was being used or what sort of ignition was installed.

akio, could you please refresh our memories as to your setup? If I remember correctly, you are running Hondata, and I still say your idle issues are tied to that.

.028" gap may be 'small', but I've been running it for 2 years now with no issues.

sure thing shark...

ENGINE
- Greddy Turbo 18G TD-05
- Greddy Type 24 Intercooler
- Greddy Type S BOV
- Greddy Profec B Spec II Boost Controller
- Hondata S200
- P28 ECU
- 440 RC Injectors
- Skunk 2 Cam Gears
- AEM Pulleys
- Nology Sparkplug Wires
- NGK Copper One Step Colder Plugs
- Fidanza Flywheel
- Exedy Ceramettalic Stage 2 Clutch
- Custom 2.5" Downpipe
- Custom 3" Mandrel Bent Piping
- Magnaflow 3" Resonator
- 2 Apexi N1 Turbo Mufflers

actually my original idle issue way back when was caused by the knock sensor and p28ecu. that issue was fixed. this is a new problem that arose right after the tuning....which is why i believe it is hondata related as u said.
