Dump Tube question.

I'm using a Turbo that has an Internal waste gate, I hav to fab a down pipe for it. I've read that seperating the exhaust and the wastegate dump tube increases hp because its a more fluid design and doesn't cause turbulence in the exhaust. My question is, How long is a long enough dump tube? can it be like 6" and be ok? Also will this gas that comes out of there be volcano Hot?

I'm no turbo expert but from the couple I've seen, the dump tube usually goes almost to the bottom of the car (around oil pan level) although I've heard of shorter ones. If you're worried about temperature, get it coated by swaintech.

BTW, won't you have to do some special fabbing to use an IWG and a dump tube? I thought they were used with EWGs.

Yeah I am doing some fabing myself, I'm using a DSM style Turbo that has the wastegate dumping into the exhaust. If its benifical I'll seperate the two I just don't know how long to make it I'd think the gas would be hot.

It's been a while since I had a turbo prelude but I think it was suppose to be around 18" or more.

a dump tube can be recycled as in the pictures or not in which case it will "dump" straight out of the WG or end of the tube. It doesnt matter how long it is but most that use a dump tube will route it below the block so the hot gas will pass underneath the car instead of staying in the engine bay.

I had mine dump straight out off the WG. Open WG sound mean as hell.

The point of a re-routed dumptube is to not disturb the exhaust flow out of the turbine. Most guys just run it down below under the oil pan area and merge it before the cat. Also, I would try to weld it so that the dumptube enters the main downpipe at an angle instead of 90 degrees into it (like pictured).

And yes, an internal WG can still utilize a dumptube. Like a DSM setup, the O2 housing (first section off the turbine) can be seperated into two sections, like this:

Thanks for all the good Info guys, This will be my first time welding steel pipe, as a plumber I've soldered/welded copper pipe as big as 6" but that's an entirely different technique I think, I'll have an expierenced welder on hand to help me out with pointers. Is it ok for me to use Mild steel for the down pipe? or should I be useing aluminized fittings?? I had planned on just picking up tubing from my local Modern muffler shop.
