Hey all i got a 2001 ss with greddy turbo. My stupid question is. If i used my boost controller and turned my boost way down could i theoretically run my car at 1 or no psi. IS this possible? If so would this be a good way to prolong the life of the turbo, Tranny, motor? I searched not discussed, sorry i sound stupid.
Thanks James
Ive thought about that too, the catch is that you cant turn the boost down below the stock spring rating. ie if you have a 6lb spring, 6 pounds is the lowest you can boost. If you had a weak spring, it would be a great way to help extend engine life -- less boost = less tear and wear on the engine.
first off, on an SS, don't bother with turbo unless you are going to get a level 10 torque converter or a manual tranny swap. I'm not really sure how those internal wg work (dsm turbos), but i'm sure there's a minimum of boost before the pressure lets up, and it is most likely more than 1 psi. Besides, if you're going to spend that much money on a turbo setup and boost only 1 psi, you are really wasting your money, cuz you will feel next to nothing. How long your motor/tranny/car lasts depends on how you drive. If you have a heavy foot, then it's best to tune for reliability (rich a/f, lots o retard, etc..) and make sure you have adequate fuel delivery (make that excessive) like larger injectors, fpr, fuel pump, stand alone to control it all. It all comes down to tuning and what your goals are.
So if lets say you buy a Greddy kit. Could a smaller spring be placed on it? They say it runs at 6-7 psi. So with the smaller spring you can drop that. But vice versa, can you jack it up to 7 psi when you want some fun out of the car?

I don't know much about the Greddy kit (internal wastegate) but I would imagine you can turn the boost up with a boost controller. You can't turn down boost less than the spring rate but you can turn it up to whatever you want. The Apexi AVC-R lets you have two settings so you can change boost at a touch of a button. I am sure other boost controllers lets you do this as well.
Greddy kit's use internal wastegates, not springs. So theres no to lower the boost unless you want to play around with the wastegate acuator and thats not recommended at all. My recommendation, read up on turbo's and wastegates and how they work. This is something you don't want to jump into without knowing what you're getting into.
