Different question about stock internals...

Sup turbo peeps,

Just so everyone knows this is not you regular "what should I do to my block for a turbo" question.

I pretty much know what needs to done for high boost (15 PSI is my goal) for a 5G:
-Con-Rods, bolts and bearings
-Turbo pistons and rings
-Ductile Iron Sleeves
-Block Guard

by my thing is at what point will the stock pistons start to melt due to the heat from a turbo? this does not include stock pistons melting from detonation.

cause I was reading up last night on tensile/compressive loads and power loads.

basically the tensile (stretching) load is on the Con-Rod it happens when the piston goes to TDC. The con-rod is "stretched" by the piston moving up, this is a tensile load.

the compressive (crunching) load also affects the con-rod but only when the piston moves to BDC, the con-rod is being "crunched" between the piston (forcing it down) and the crank, this is your compressive load.

now there is the power load, this is from the force/pressure that drives the piston down from TDC to BDC (controlled combustion)

Now my question is can't I just replace the Con-Rods? because there is obviously a lot of load on them from a turbo engine.

If I can prove that the OEM H22 pistons will stand up to the heat of a turbo engine (15 PSI) couldn't I just leave that stock? can't I just replace the piston rings? is it possible?

The bottom line is I don't want to have to get my block shipped off to get sleeved if I don't need too.

I don't think the stock sleeves will live very long past 11 or 12psi. That is just what I've heard from others who had problems with them, so don't take it as gospel. If your going to be pulling everything apart to do the rods, you might as well do the sleeves IMHO, if your going to do the sleeves, you might as well do the pistons since you have to resleeve to do them anyway.

It's not the pistons melting that you need to worry about. Stock cast pistons are fairly strong, they're just brittle. The ringlands are very high on the piston which is good for na, but they break very easily on an FI engine.

On the FI forum on Honda-Tech there's pictures of cracked, even shattered ringlands about once a month.

well the only reason I don't like the idea of getting my block sleeved is the fact hat the block has to be sent off to get the sleeves. unless of course I can buy an extra used block or a new one for a 2001 Lude!. I dont know how long the re-sleeving process would take. maybe its time to get me a beater car

golden eagle will sleeve your block in 2 weeks time. i hear they are pretty good about turn around times.

You won't need a block guard w/ the sleeves.

Come to think of it I saw a picture of DirtyLudes sleeves and I cant remember seeing a open deck. is sleeving a block boring it out and dropping the sleeves in there?
