Building a custom turbo

Is it possible to build a turbo for my 92 4ws instead of buying a full kit at once? Can I run the turbo without the intercooler in the fist place? I am thinking of finding a used turbine from another car, then buy a suitable exhaust header to put it on my car. The reason for doing it this way is I don't want to wait until I saved enough money to buy a full kit, I want to enjoy some power gain from the turbo while I gradually building the system. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, that is what I did.

Yes, but I wouldn't. The intake charge would be very hot.

You can use a volvo or saab turbo or whatever. They won't have the topend power of a good T3/T4 though. Unless you can weld very well, you will have to buy a Drag, FMax, or Revhard manifold.

Buy the parts gradually, gently used parts are usually a bargain. Put it all on at once.
