Bent Valves Help

I know this isn't really FI specific, but this is the only place I can get to the good people.

I'm assuming I've bent some valves in my engine. If this is the case, when I pull the head, what ALL needs to be replaced? Obviously the valve(s) and the seals. What else? Also, what about the valve seats, should they be cool?

I was thinking about just buying a H22A4 head. (I'm also assuming I can't use a H22A1 head) without cams or any of the upper stuff and no sensors.

Any help from anyone that knows what I should do would be appreciated. I'm pulling the motor this weekend.

I saw a few heads for salein thepartstrader.com .
You could replace the valves only, but must re-seat the valves by having the valves/seats ground together. The seats don't usually need replacing unless they are severely damaged. Usually some lapping would be fine.

Whether you should or shouldn't change the head is up to you. Which ever is more cost effective.... You could get the other head, bolt it on and repair your other one or just have head work done then sell the head that you replaced the damaged one with. A good complete head should be @ $3-500. I am planning to buy a motor, so if you can wait on the head, I'll sell you one for $4-500 depending on the one I recieve's condition. It will either be my stock 2000 or a 1999 head.....

As far as replacing the valves, it would start with a new set to replace the damaged ones. It it rides and sits straight, then lap the valves/seats. If they are loose in the valve guides (pretty unlikely) then change the guides. You could pull the good valves off of the good cylinder/s and install them on the damaged side to check for leaks. The guides and seats are pretty hard, so if you're lucky, there will be no unrepairable damage.....HTH

Don't worry about destroying your motor every now and then, just be sure to have alternative transportation and the damage not too severe, hehehe.....

whenever i bent some valves, one of the exhaust valve guides had a crack in it....the crack was located at the end of the valve guide...the valve that was in it was pretty bent out of shape....u might get lucky and won't have to replace....what Portflow did was they machined the exhaust valve guides to be flush with the exhaust port on the head so there would be laminar flow exiting the head....this allowed me to not having to replace the cracked valve guide

i have a complete h22a1 head that i might sell....still debating whether i should put that on the h22a4 SH block whenever i pull the motor and sell it as a complete motor with tranny

Thanks for the help. Like ya said, I'll just go by whichever is more cost effective. I'll let ya know what I find out this weekend.

Quaalude - I wasn't sure if I could use an H22A1 head or not on my block? Since I can get one of those for pretty cheap. Can I?

If you do end up buying a H22A1 head. You'll need to make sure you get the proper H22A1 Head gasket because th A1 and A4 gaskets are different.

I think if u use the H22A1 head, then u have to use the H22A4 headgasket since the H22A4 block is open deck. The H22A4 headgasket has passages for the coolant for the head.
