~240-250 WHP Turbo Exhaust Size

Hi, I am in a strange dilemma.

I wish to eventually (within 2 years) boost my Prelude.

So, I'm currently stuck on planning my mods until then. Basically, I have ordered a Mugen Exhaust. It is currently on Backorder, so I CAN cancel it at the moment.

My main concern is the fact that the Mugen Exhaust is only 2.36"
I also believe (not 100% sure), that the Mugen Exhaust bottle necks at the Catalytic converter down to 2".

Basically, Im wondering if I should complete the purchase with the intention of boosting my car a year or 2 later. (and keeping the exhaust).

I came across this:
1999 Honda Prelude | Honda Prelude Enthusiast Article at Automotive.com

Its a fairly long read for those who havent seen this before. So I'll sum it up real quick;

He is running JRSC, Mugen Header and Mugen Exhaust. He has ~250whp. He also has a bunch of other mods to the motor etc.

Considering he is running JRSC, can I assume its below 10psi? well, regardless, he has achieved 250whp with Mugen exhaust/header. Which leads me to believe I can achieve my goals of ~240whp with Mugen exhausts.

Do you guys think this is worth it... in other words, is the Mugen exhaust going to be more trouble than its worth? NOTE: the cost of the exhaust is not a concern for me, so money isnt part of the dilemma.

Thanks for your time!

Doesn't matter what you're doing.
Get a 3" exhaust which is also good for NA application.

^thanks for the reply! i know most people will say get 2.5 or 3.

Basically, my dilemma came from my love of the mugen sound, and not wanting to catch too much attention. (cops here are very picky with anything louder than average car). and not really wanting to buy the obx mugen replica.

I know stock 2006 subaru STI run 2.25" and can reach 300whp with a tune up. since my goals were 240-250 only, i figured 2.36" would be more than enough.

I contacted my mechanic, who did the 5speed swap on my car. He builds custom turbos for a lot of hondas and acuras. he says he can easily help me reach my 250 goal with even the stock 2" exhaust.

So, i guess to sum up. Im sticking with the mugen for now, and put this worry behind me ;]

Yup, a t3/04e with around 9 psi should get you close to 250... Thats how my brother started (also used a low comp head gasket to drop from 10:1 to 9:1 on stock internals)

I ran this exact setup.. but 6psi..mugen header and exhaust. the mugen header is 2.36 and same with the exhaust except for a one foot section right after the cat. it tapers down to 2". that is not optimal for boost. im running 3 now after the mugen header. it feels better..faster in high rpms

if you have enough money: get WHOLE exhaust custom made. about same price what mugen would be, right?

and why you even talk about mugen header when you need turbo header?

otherwise, you cant go wrong with mugen. Its more how the exhaust flows than the size.

"A common misconception is that "bigger is better". Many enthusiasts, and manufacturers too, seem to feel that very large diameter pipes are the only way to go for car performance, while we at BORLA have found for street use, big pipes just take energy out of the exhaust, both by slowing down exhaust gas velocity and by cooling off the gases. While exhaust may leave the port at 1500 degrees or more, at the tailpipe it's down to 150 degrees -- a sign energy has been lost. Velocity and uninterrupted flow are the real performance-making factors."
- BORLA PERFORMANCE INDUSTRIES

almost any brand name 60mm should be enough in most cases. I have skunk2 60mm and it doesnt narrow after cat. I think that youre overpaying there, Mugen is good, but you can get another as good exhaust with half on its price!

and btw, Chinese SRS have made copy of Mugen exhaust. MUCH cheaper

its just that how much 4th and 5th gens back mufflers attachments differ from each others..

mugen exhaust necks down after the cat...along with MOST aftermarket exhausts for the lude. If skunk2 doesnt, thats kool and rare
