how much do tires affect 1/4 times?

iv got yokohama avid h4's on that are larger then stock size

are these tires really that bad? they are 215/45/17 but should be 215/40/17

what tires are good for the 1/4 mile and also a daily driver?
i dont drive in snow but in the rain sometimes so what should i go with?

my 1/4 mile time was 16.7
first time out

I can say that the Yokohama AVS ES100 tire is a bad ass tire. It gets the job done for daily driving and handles decently in the rain. Drag racing is where the tire really shines, with 195/50/R15 tires I could cut 2.1x 60' times all day.

Well, can't say much about the Avid H4 since I've never owned it, but the tire itself in no means was it made for drag racing. But with most average street tires you should be able to pull off atleast a 2.3 60' time. Next time at the track drop you tire pressure to about 18-20psi and try slipping the clutch a bit more instead of dumping it.

Best bet is to put on the stockers, lower them to 17-20lbs, play around with the pressure, see at which you do your best, and since your auto Try different methods of launching. The hold brake and Gas technique, etc... Just go out there and experiement.

If you are automatic then I don't think you need to be concerned about what tire you use since you probably will see little to no wheel spin. Lets say you have a 5spd and you have 17" wheels, lowring the tire pressure to about 18-20psi would not bend your wheel since you would be racing on a flat surface.

tires don't help out any more then how good the driver can drive..

it is said, that for every .1 second off of your 60 foot, equals a little more then .2 in the quarter mile..

in my experience it's almost .25

^ I wouldnt completely agree with that. A horrible tire will make a difference in your ET. Why do you think slicks make such a big difference between times. I do agree though that with most decent street tires its gonna be up to the driver to get a good time.

stickier tires SHOULD yeild you a better time.. but only if the driver can launch it harder (which isn't hard)

i have seen many people with an over kill on their tires.. example.. a friend of mine borrowed my slicks for his car.. granted they are 32 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide.. they are heavy.. but they grip.. he didn't slip the cluth enough and got worse on his et.. granted this was a almost stock mustang with 2.73 gear.. but i will agree that a crappy tire will make a difference, even if you are an experienced driver..
