Want a sequential shifter? Look here...

This is a repost from the General forum, but I think it deserves special mention here.

This guy has made a rather extraordinary sequential shifter for his Prelude. He and a friend designed and built it themselves. Both of them live in Prague.

In his thread, he mentions the possibility of making more for others that are truly interested. I figure there are probably some serious track guys here (Billy, DR, Todd, Corey, etc.) that might want to take the opportunity to buy one. I don't think there is a reasonable possibility of getting one from any other source, although it would be damn fun to try and design one.

To me this seems like a really rare opportunity. There isn't likely to be any other time at which someone could get a sequential for the Lude. I would suggest contacting him directly. If there are more than 1 of you here that wants one, we should organize a group order.

There are better ways to spend $1300, IMO (the other thread mentioned 900 to 1100 Euros). Very cool idea indeed, but I wonder what series it would be legal for (which really doesn't matter to me ) Nevertheless, I would probably buy one if I wanted to spend that much on a shifter. Does the price include new cables, those cables look like modified stock units?

Also, have you guys watched the video? I just watched it. Very cool unit, but that shift throw looks really long! I'd be interested in watching it side by side with a regular shifter to see how much time you're saving with the sequential.

Being able to avoid misshifts is a nice bonus feature, though!

I noticed the long throws, too. I wonder if a Neuspeed short shift adapter would work on that?

No.

The shifter mechanism was designed originally for a porsche, but that basic structure is portable to everything.

Yeah I thought the same thing. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was going to cost a grip. I agree that $1300 can go to other things. However, if u a baller, this might be an opportunity.

you still have to clutch in though

i guess you could get used to it. thats alot of money. money could be spent elsewhere but very novel idea. i guess it would be much quicker if you didn't have to clutch in/out.

If you're balling out of control you could couple it with some straight cut dog gears.

I am not a baller.

It can be done if the gearbox is dog engagement. I know several manufacturers of race gears that could fabricate some for the H22. You don't really want to know the price though.

alphajesse and I were talking about it. Basically, if you got the dog box gearset, you would need a few other things. It would be best to operate the shift forks either hydraulically or with solenoids. Shifting control would be electronic, which could be built (if I had the money and equipment, I could probably design it). Also, it could be done clutchless if the ECU has an external spark cut input. James@HRtuning could hook that up (if someone made it worth his while ). The shifter could either be on the floor or with paddles, it wouldn't matter much at that point.

The most expensive part would be the transmission upgrade. A full dog set, which can either be helical or straight cut, runs about $2k. The rest of the control system would be another $2-3k

That's not too bad. When you were saying "you don't wanna know" I was thinking between $10K-$15K.

...plus, the guy that has this installed on his Prelude probably wasn't out much money...just alot of time.

Whoops. Sorry to get your blood boiling Billy, I was way off on the gearset pricing. I was probably thinking of something else.

After actually looking, most of the custom gearsets for the WRX are in the $7500-10000 range. Many of the same companies do Hondas as well, although the H series would be a custom project for them.

If $10k is worth it (which to nearly everyone probably not), I can name 3 or 4 shops that would do the work.

Eek, Houseman quoted $5k a few years ago. I'm sure that's up to $7k by now. I'm not interested, but at $2k I'd seriously consider it.
