Track day - Good & bad!!

Copied from my profile on PreludeUK:

Track Day Part 1

Format - Track Scotland Track Day 9am-5pm open pit
Cost - £185 + £10 for each additional driver + Free passengers
Conditions - Dry but still slippery in the morning, Sunny with intermittent showers in the afternoon

I had been looking forward for this day for three months , ever since my last track day with Track Scotland. I had spent the previous couple of weeks getting the tack car ready for today, even not going to the last couple of regular Knockhill days so to prepare, every thing was sweet apart from the car was really needing a wash:

Crap!

The track day was the day before round two of the UK Time Attack Series at Knockhill. Some of the Time Attack cars would be sharing the day with us so that they may test their race settings. I was concerted that I would just get in the way of these cars, some running 600bhp+, but in the end most of them ran in the morning and others cried off because of the rain. The afternoon was fairly clear of traffic and we got some good laps in 8).

The day didn't get off to the best start as my best mate/mechanic/co-pilot/man servant Steve forgot his helmet and had to go back to get it. This made us a bit late but we just managed to make the race briefing.

Nice 911, sounded mental

We met up with PUKer Graham (Indigolemon) at Knockhill, and he came out with me early morning to have a warm up run.

Sorry for the shaky video, my camera mount has become a bit loose. It's something I will fix before the next time out. Look out for us nearly running into a spinning Blue XR2i around 5 mins.

That run was great, the car was feeling good and the track was drying up and getting some heat into it. I decided to stick the slicks on. The wheels that the slicks are on use a tuner nut instead of the fatter OEM nut, I got some brand new off FunkyPower. When I was trying to fit them I snapped two wheel studs off the front left  I blame 4thgenphil for selling me cursed wheels:

Even with one snapped stud (especially on the front left) meant I couldn't use the 4G on the track for the rest of the day

Track Day Part 2

With the 4G out of the game and only 1.5 hours of the track day gone I decided that I had to go and get my 5G . The only problem with that was that it's at my dads house in the Scottish Borders. Two hours of driving later, me and Graham made it back to knockhill in time for the start of the four hour afternoon session.

About halfway though the afternoon I was reversing back to go back out on track, but I hit someone's trailer   [-o<

Nothing too serious, the lip is now held on by cable ties on that side, but there is a big scrape on the bumper.

Missing my wind deflector that fell off last week

As the 5th gen doesn't have a mount for the camera so I couldn't record while I had a passenger. I got a decent run by myself and set a new PB :P.

Last time I had the 5th gen on the track I was a complete novice, but know that I know what I'm doing it was great, a lot better than my track car  But I need to replicate that in my 4G.

Thanks for sharing the story, and for the great pics! Hopefully you'll get your 4th gen and 5th gen fixed up again. BTW, since you have the 4WS on the 5th gen, what was your driving impressions on it vs. the 4th gen? Seemed like you got faster and consistent lap times on the 5th gen.

Cheers guys.

Jacques - I'll start by saying the 5th gen has had alot more money spent on it and is running coilovers, while the 4th gen only has stock shocks and lowering springs. I'll invest in coilovers for it soon. They are both using the exact same brakes and tyres.

I feel that the 4WS gives the 5G a much better controlled turn in for the corners, Its easier to choose you line and stick to it. Where I would be sliding sideways in a corner in the 4G, I am able to turn and hold grip far better in the 5G.

Lap time comparison is slightly skewed as it the track was cold and slippy when I did my 4G laps. However, the 5G is about a second faster round the track when compared like-for-like. One of the reasons for this is the M2P4 short ratio gear box that comes from the factory with the H22a8 (99-00 UKDM 5G). Since we are on the subject on comparing the two you might as well see this (any power figures are flywheel bhp):

4G Specs:
UKDM H22a2
Spoon JDM P13 ECU - VTEC @ 5K (no limiter)
Stock intake with resonator removed
K&N Flat panel filter
Fujitsubo exhaust manifold
2.4" SS Japspeed decat
2.4" straight through SS Japspeed exhaust
M2F5 gearbox

5G Specs:
Stock UKDM H22a8 VTEC @ 5.5K Limiter @ 7.8K
Stock H22a8/Type-S intake
K&N Flat panel filter
M2P4 gearbox

These two cars videoed and overlapped on the track:

One last thing, Im about to drop a Honda Accord Type-R H22a7 (212bhp stock @ the fly) into the 4G. Its the engine that everyone gets the intake manifold off (the one that is sold by Rosko Racing although they say it comes off a Euro-R).

Thanks for posting more stuff on both your cars. The Accord Type R swap should be pretty sweet!

Anyone here do kart racing? If yes. Let me share this go karting florida track from K1speed. Its good since most k1speed are indoor and using electric kart. If you want to race and its raining this is the place.
