Well, I had an opportunity to buy a set of used Hoosier R3S03. They happened to be two 225/50/16 and two 245/45/16. Before I mounted these tires on the wheels, I was afraid that the 245 might be too wide for the 7" wheel width. I had them mounted anyway. Here are the pictures.

For comparison, here is the 225/50/16 Kumho V710
Here are the side-by-side pictures. These are both Hoosiers, 245 on the left and 225 on the right.
245 Hoosier on the left and 225 Kumho on the right.
As shown in the pictures, 245 Hoosier is quite bulged out when mounted on 7" wide wheel. It is still a little bit wider than either of the 225 tires. I'm thinking that since Hoosier tires are normally wider than any other tire, a 245/45/16 Toyo RA1 might look just like the 225 Hoosier or 225 Kumho. I think 245/45/16 Toyo RA1 will be my next set of tires. What do you guys think?

That IS alot of bulge...on "both" sizes of Hoosiers. Have you driven on them yet? I'm really curious to see how much rollover they have. They look like they would feel soft and squishy.
No doubt based on the pics that the 225 Kumhos have the best fit. Great post btw... it really helps to see such comparisons
I interested in the 245/45/16 RA-1 results. I have to swap over to the Toyos before NASA nationals and I'm wondering if the extra width of the 245 will make it more like my current 225 Hoosiers. I also wonder if the 245/45/16 will be faster than the 225/45/15. There is a big jump in price with the RA-1 when you go from the 15" to the 16" which factors in as well.

I haven't driven on them yet. Unfortunately, one of the 245 had a hole right on the shoulder. So I ended up with two 225/50/16 Kumho V710's and two 225/50/16 Hoosier R3S03's on the Spoon wheels. I took those pictures just before taking the 245 off.
DR, how wide are your 15s?

I wouldnt think that the bulge would have much of an effect (if at all) on the stiffness of the sidewall. In fact, I'd think you would have LESS rollover with the wider tire.
Interesting comparo, Vincent. Anyone care to do a comparo for 15s?

Nevermind the fact that Hoosier DOT-R's have steel reinforced sidewalls and are slightly cantilevered to begin with, running narrower wheels on a tire like that is no big deal. You should see how bulged my V710s are on my S2k, I'll try to remember to take a pic of them.
Mounting street tires like that can make them wobbly, but DOT-R's are a different scenario.
David, I don't know if this will help you, but I've had a little experience on those sizes with an 8" wide wheel.
My fastest time at Hallett was turned on an old set of R3s03 Hoosiers in 215/40/16. The gearing was awesome, but the times were inconsistant as I had to back off after a couple of hard laps - 1'34.085 was my best
On the Hoosier R3s04s in 245/45/16 (F) and 225/50/16 (R), my best time was 1'35.962...but the whole session was very consistant ranging from high 1'35s to low 1'37s.
Both of those tires were mounted on a set of FD wheels.
