Spring Rates on DD autox car with SPSS3 Koni's?

I'm currently running a GC/OTS Koni setup with 380f/420r spring rates. I'm going to send them in to be shortened and revalved to SPSS3 so I'm wondering what spring rates would still be somewhat comfortable (they don't bother me at all right now with the shocks set to full stuff).

At a minimum I will move the 420lb springs to the front and buy either 550s or 600s for the rear. I'm leaning towards the 550s because I just ordered a Progress sway bar so I think I'll still be able to get enough rotation.

My other option would be to go straight to something like a 600f/800r setup but I'm not sure how that will feel on Colorado roads even with the revalve. Any input would be much appreciated.

I think 600f/800r is going to push the envelope for a DD. Those are close to track only rates. A lot of the ride quality will depend on the shock valving. When I had my Koni sports shorted and revalved, I ran 650 fronts with 550 rears (before I knew better), and it was on the ragged edge of beating me up.

Yes, you can revalve Koni's to SPSS3. Its a valving design on the shocks to increase the range of rebound (IIRC) damping. For direct information email Koni:

I had my revalved Konis on GC 400f/600r on Louisiana roads. It was hell before the revalve, and very tolerable afterwards. And Colorado roads are lightyears better than they are here.

I ran on 650's all around on revalved Koni yellows that were converted to doubles for about a year. It wasnt horrible, but not something I would recommend to someone looking for comfort either.

I used to live in Lafayette so I'm not sure I agree about the roads. The highways are pretty nice here but the sidestreets are horrible in the part of town I live. It looks like I'll be going the 420/550 route. I can always move the 550s up front and buy something in the 700-800 range later. Will be good to see how I like having 30% stiffer springs in back as opposed to 10% stiffer like I have now. 10% is definitely not giving me enough rotation, but my progress sway is in the mail right now so we'll see.

If you're buying new springs, I highly recommend H&R or Hypercoil. I'd run H&Rs myself, but they don't make a 2.25" ID spring, so I run Hypercoils now.

I already ordered 6.5" 550lb springs from GC. He said they are barrelled so they won't hit the collars as easily too. I guess I should've read some more before buying the springs but I'll keep it in mind if I decide to change rates again.

FWIW, I run 550f/600r on my revalved konis, daily driven. It's perfectly tollerable for me and most of my non-female passengers. (boobies + bumpy ride = complaints)

Why do you recommend those two over Eibach?

H&R because they're slightly lighter and cheaper. Hypercoil because they some of the BEST springs you can buy. Rates are matched within 2%, no worries about rate overlap, etc. IIRC, most springs have a 5% tolerance on rate. That's pretty friggin big, and you can run into rate overlap issues (unless you actually test the springs yourself and match them).

I've been told by people more knowledgeable than myself that when they had Eibachs, their corner weights would wander, but when they switched to Hypercoil, that issue went away. Take it for what it's worth. I've never experienced it myself, but I don't corner weigh my car every weekend.

^^^Thanks for the info. When it comes time to revalve my Konis and increase my spring rates, I'll look into this more carefully now.

Really? Eibach's rep on H-T (yeah, I know...) claims that they will beat out anyone and have tol's within 2%. They supposedly are willing to test their stuff against anyone for free, but then again I haven't really inquired how that all works out but there's $100 riding on Eibach to win supposedly.
