Yommer had some last minute issue at work and will NOT be attending. Althought, I heard that he just bought a '95 VTEC Prelude that he might campaign in GS next year... :-D Yommer if you're reading this I still have a set of revalved Konis sitting in the garage...
I'm heading out tomorrow (Sat) morning, hoping to arrive in time to see the ProSolo Challenge.
Still a couple of things that need to be done on the car, but we are going to do them in Topeka... the dyno results were promising, so some of the stress level has been releaved.
I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn on SW Westport Dr. until Saturday...

So much for his statement sometime ago that he'd never buy another Prelude again. He isn't on this board anymore, unless people browsing the board can see this section.
I'm at the same hotel as Zack...Econolodge I think. I (and the wifey, who's also competing in my car in DSPL) are going up there on Wednesday. I couldn't get my work to let me have the whole week off.

Is it better than the Econo Lodge? Not that I plan to move to another hotel this late, but maybe I'll look for it for future reference.

Yommer was gonna share a seat with my co-driver from this year, but apparently he had to back out...oh well AS looks to be a pretty big battle that I hope not to get completely destroyed in.
3) Factory undercoating missing from entire floorpan
4) missing spare tire cover board
It was #3 that got them tossed along with something else that was found by the protest committee while inspecting the car for #3. Turns out that it was also missing the interior glued-on tar -based sound deadening mat.
Tough break.

yeah it was definetely a tough break, especially considering none of those things had anything to do with how bad he spanked the class(put another 6 tenths on them on day 2)...but the rules are the rules.
I've never had to go thru someone going over my car with such a fine tooth comb, and truthfully I felt confindent when they were doing so. We spend the last month of our lives replacing IMPORTANT parts of the car that were OEM replacement parts (not-OEM), such as rebuilding an engine, replace clutch, flywheel, pressure plate. We even went as far as replacing the rear interior panels because there were cut for a previously installed rear strut tower bar. Regardless, at this point I feel like I've wasted the last month of my life.
Personally, as they kept coming back to the car trying to find something different it was starting to become apparent that it didn't matter what they found they were going to protest it for something. Jason Rhoades mentioned the rear shock tower covers and spare tire cover to me in impound, I offered to go to the junkyard and replace them for Fridays competition.
Rear Shock Tower Panels
Yes, they were missing. The PC commitee ruled I was in the wrong, but No Performance Advantage.
Cardboard over Spare Tire
This piece does not fasten down to the car, and over half of the cars in grid did not have them installed, the PC commitee ruled that it was not needed. So there is a ruling for everyone that it isn't needed.
Exhaust Length
The exhaust existing behind the driver issue is very close on the car (obviously too close), I guess we'll just make another one that is an inch longer. But again we are literally talking about an inch MAYBE of exhaust pipe length, maybe. The PC committee ruled against me in this case.
Underbody Coating
The dealer applied underbody coating was removed from the car, this is the same coating that Andy Hollis was removing from his car, but finally decided that 4-5 pounds wasn't worth it. The PC committee ruled against me in this case because they felt that the factory coating was removed. My understanding is that the factory applied undercoating is the rougher feeling paint on the lower parts of your car, this is still on the car. Secondly, there is nothing the PC committee or I could find in the Helms that stated the dealer applied undercoated was needed. I was going to appeal this ruling because I have met the burdon of proving that it isn't in the FSM, I challenge Kevin or anyone else to show me some documentantion that it is needed.
Missing Interior Insulation
While inspecting the car in the protest builing the PC committee found that there was some insulation missing from the floor under the carpet. Personally, this is the reason that protest was upheld and we were DSQ'd. If it wasn't for this I would have filed the appeal.
At this point I wish I would have filed the appeal rgarding the undercoating so someone else wouldn't have to go thru this again... I apoligize to the next person who has to go thru this.
After being protested I drove the car onto the scaled in the tech building and it was 2280. I weight in at 218-220 pounds and the jack was in the car... so 2020 is what the weights. I know that my car last year was under 2000 pounds.
At this point I feel the STS class is more about people reading there rulebook and picking your car apart than driving. It's a shame. I understand that cars need to be legal, but I feel at least 2 of the items listed (tower covers and cardboard) on the protest were past the line, were talking about a car that is 17 years old. I really don't think there is one person in the grid at has a 100% legal car to these standards, but you know what I wouldn't want to have my name on an protest of this type. Hopefully, in the future will drive their cars and not their pens.
Thanks to everyone that supported us through the day, and those that offered rides.
-Jason Frank
I understand that people need to play by the rules, but these items are pretty weenie. The other thing that really upset me is that at no point did Kevin McCormick even approach me before or after filing the protest, a matter a fact he wouldn't even look at me.

It was interesting to see how he avoided you before, and especially after your disqualification. The only time he remotely acknowledge anything related to you was when he and the SCCA officials moved your car away from his grid spot (was that intentional that you parked on his spot?), and after you and your codriver moved it to its proper spot (right next to Kevin), he avoided any eye contact with you. Maybe he was afraid you'd sucker punch him in the face. Seriously though, I realize rules are rules, but how much weight savings is all this really? 5 pounds, maybe? Also, I just don't get the underbody coating part of the protest. As you and I discussed in person, how do you classify this as a car part, and I don't recall in the rules (or in a Helms manual for that matter) about underbody coating being a requirement.
It is a shame that STS every year has some kind of protest about something. It's a far cry from CP/CPL, where drivers will offer their car if one of the competitors' car breaks down (which often happens in CP, and did happen during the two days). Now, I can understand rules have to be enforced for obvious infractions (ie: engine, suspension, significant weight saving illegalities, etc.), but you got disqualified for 4 nitpicky things! Well, at least your runs, though they didn't count, proved that your driving should do the talking.

Seriously. You drove damn well out there and should be proud of it.

We'll continue to work on the car, and come back next year. It sucks that it went down like that, and I really think it was a weenie protest. I know that illegal is illegal, but this is a little overboard.... I wouldn't have my name associated with any such protest, some of those issues are just laughable.
In the end, you hung 1.3 seconds on them over the course of 2 days. Alot of people are going to head back to the drawing board. I do find the 2 days PCs at odds with each other. On T/W there several rullingsm including 1 protest that covered 5+ parts on anothers cars that the car was found illegal, and the competitor was reprimanded.
Including: Aeroparts on a DM car, the splitter on Stan Whitney's car, and the boxed frame rails on Wilcox coar in GS. All those were only reprimanded.
Thursday was not as friendly, and most protests were upheld it would seem. The CP protest is currently under appeal IIRC.
