SFR AutoX school

For those of you in the Bay Area, SFR just opened up registration for their annual AutoX School. SCCA membership is required plus at least 2 events experience. I took the class 2 years ago and found it very helpful. I also got lots of seat time too. They're only offering 75 spots, so if you want in, sign up NOW!!!!

Link to the page in case you dont have it:

http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/

edit: I probably should include the date and location, right? Saturday, April 6th at 3Com Park.

Whoa. How much money does it cost? I went to the link but it takes some kind of application program I don't have to get the information.

$75. The application is in PDF form so you'll need Adobe Acrobat reader which you could find here:

I coulda sworn I have that. Oh well, 75 bones is kind of steep for a morning's play anyway.

Is the $75 really worth it? Or can I rent out the infamous Pork Chop? That is, if I ever see him at an event. I guess I'll have to think about it...

Just curious, has anyone heard of this guy?

since I was thinking about starting to show up to those, even though there's no track time involved. Seems to be a fun thing to do.

Not just one morning, it's the whole day! Typically, 3 or 4 basic exercises, then they set up a full course.

This is probably the only autoX school available in the area this year. The NASA school is in February and is already full. The Evolution school probably wont be held this year because they can't use Mather Field this year. Compared to the Evolution school's $175, the SFR school is a bargain!

I thought it was worth it at the time. It depends on who your instructor is, so it is somewhat of a gamble. You might end up with an ok instructor, or you might get lucky and end up with a multiple national championship instructor.

A school is useful in that you get some constructive feedback from your instructor. I suppose you could just do a lot of events and get plenty of seat-time that way, but you might be doing something wrong, and then you're just reinforcing bad habits.

I haven't heard much about the Doc Wong stuff. Sounds like a little bit of classroom instruction and then some practical on-road sessions. Since they're on public roads, I doubt they really push that hard. Probably useful for general driving technique and fundamentals, but they don't have the luxury of an open lot where you can really push the limits of your car/ability without too many risks.

As for my services as an "instructor", I'm always willing to ride along with anyone and offer some helpful info. Also, I don't mind taking passengers along for my first run (unfortunately I have a tendency to spin on my first run, so consider a ride-along as a demonstration of what NOT to do!). I haven't been around lately, but I'll be back by March.

Um, don't wait too long to decide if you want to go. The school fills up FAST!!! The registration has been out for a day now, so you might end up on a waiting list by now.

You're taking about Evolution right? Looking at the schedule, it looks like they'll be in Cincinnati twice this year.

Chop's right -
The SFR school is good. Depending on who you get as an instructor you may get a better deal than the evolution school. I took the school last year and got the 199? CS champ and current AS champ. I got a lot out of it.

Instructor pairing is based on car matching, experience level, etc. It's not as random as chop seemed to imply.

Chop will likely be one of the instructors at the school...

Right, the instructor matchups aren't random. I should have clarified that.

Most, if not all, of the instructors are highly qualified and I think they will be pretty effective. When I took the class 2 years ago, I got a lot of useful advice from my instructor, but the most beneficial instruction I got was when he took the wheel and showed me how much faster I could push the car. A real eye-opening experience, IMO.

I doubt I will be instructing at the SFR school. I might need some instruction of my own since I'm just a tad rusty now.

I also took the school last year, and while I didn't have a National Champion for an instructor, I did have someone who knew what he was doing, and could see what I wasn't doing right. I found it very helpful, and while I'm no longer a novice, I'm taking it again this year. The most important and RARE commodity in autocross is SEAT TIME, and $75 for a day behind the wheel is a bargain to me.

It was ALSO a nice way to be relaxed and get to meet some people, drive (abuse) someone else's car, and really mess up a set of someone else's Kumhos! Yeah!
