I had a great time at the Redline Time Attack event this past weekend. Saturday was a open track day. As usual, I was there to run as well as to help instructing. I ran on my old BFG R1's and turned a best of 1:22.1xx (just for comparison, my friend in an Honda Challenge H4 CRX turned a 1:21.xxx last year). I felt good with the time considering that I was running on probably 3 years old tires. I did notice excessive understeer in 2 corners, but I didn't really look into the reason.
Then Sunday, I brought my V710's for the Time Attack. When I swapped the tires out, the front tires were both corded. That explained why the car was understeering. So I slapped on the V710's and got teched. The V710's bumped me up from Modified FWD class to Unlimited FWD class. I found out that the only other competitor in the Unlimited FWD class was a SE-R Cup race car driven by someone who's kind of well-known in the Nissan community.
So practice session 1 was up, I decided to try it out for just a few laps because I didn't want to overheat the V710's again (I did that in a track event last year, ended up having need to buy 2 new V710's). I did 5 laps, and my best was 1:19.8xx.

A 2.3 seconds improvement from Saturday. The SE-R Cup car turned a 1:22.xxx in the same session. During practice session 2, he improved his lap time to 1:20.xxx. I didn't go out because I wanted to save tires.
In the first session of Time Attack, he was let on the track sooner than I was. So I couldn't gage myself against him. Lap times were posted until at the end of the event. But I found out that during that session, I turned a 1:18.8xx.
In the second session of Time Attack, he was behind me on the track. Every lap, midway into the back straight, I would check my mirror to see where he was at. He was about 3 corners back on every lap, but it was hard for me to gage since I was briefly looked at the mirror. It seemed to me that he wasn't really gaining on me, so I didn't have to worry much. I kept pushing hard, and I felt that I did a faster lap. Well, I did. My best in that session was 1:17.912. He improved to 1:19.4xx.
After the award ceremony, he questioned about the times because he thought that Redline didn't have his information correctly. We checked with the officials, but it seemed like the times were correct. At the end, we both shook hands and thought that it was still a fun weekend. I was just happy that I turned a sub 1:20 lap, and I was the quickest FWD car in the Time Attack. Great weekend nonetheless.
