Pick a number

When i decide on a number for my car and pre register on myautoevents or the like and it says that i am assigned a number (i picked), is it ok to get my numbers made? And when i sign up for SCCA membership do i get a perm assigned number?

For autocross or road racing?

In SOLO2, there is no "assigned" or permanent number for the SCCA. Locally that may be a different story though. Getting numbers, and class letters made is a great idea that makes identifying your car much easier on Timing and scoring, as well as corner workers.

In SCCA competition a 2 digit number identifies the first driver, and the same number preceded by a 1 denotes the second driver.

I personally have numbers:
4 x 7
2 x 3
2 x 1
2 x CS (class)

So that I can be any combination of 7s and 3s, and have a co-driver. I prefer 77.

I would wait until after your first event before buying magnetic numbers, just to be safe. I remember is myautoevents has a method to keep track of which numbers are "taken". Most regions, that I have seen, keep track of taken numbers in there own timing & scoring database. At the time you register, as long as that number and class combo is not being used, it is yours. At the end of every season we "purge" numbers that did not have a certain level of acivity. Say 4 events per year. That way the numbers of those who attend most of the region events are preserved yet we do not run out of numbers.

So to answer your other question you do not get assigned a permanent number when you get an SCCA membership. You have a 6 digit member number, but it has nothing to do with your car number. Your car number will be vailid for that region only. So if you went to an autocross at another region, someone else may be already using your number and you will have to choose another one when you run with that region.

Well what i was thinking about doing is before my autocross meets, i would just get my number and class cut in vinyl and stick it on cause i can get the hook up with vinyl.

In our region of SCCA autocross there is a "blue book" that you can register your number in. This means that you will be the "main" user of the number, but it won't prevent other ppl occaisonally infringing on it. Just pick a number that means something to you and make it. The costs are quite cheap if you do it yourself.

...also, I don't know how many (if any others) regions are going to this policy, but my local region is requiring permanant or magnetic numbers to run. This means no more tape or paper numbers.

I don't know why they are doing this...seems a little discriminating to me...but they are.
