For the last year i've been fun carless, i'm going to go insane.
Here's what i've done:
600+hours in the Prelude various HPDEs and regional events in Colorado and Ohio regions.
150 hours formula ford in NM and AZ regions, along with some fun in Colorado hill climbs.
75 hours 125cc shifter karts, most unlimited classes.
a) Prelude = I don't want a DD/race car again haha
b) FF is not fast enough for me (atleast the car I was co-driving wasn't fast enough!)
c) karting is too child oriented IMO. Too many 'soccer' type parents that were in the same class as I was. also, day-to-day seat time doesn't transfer over as well.
I'm looking for a new street/not-street legal car that can push faster track times than the prelude and is reasonably cheap on maintenance/tires.
What i've considered:
Solo/Formula Vee
BMWCCA Cars
Other vintage openwheel cars
I'm broke (house + med bills) so I need to ensure it's not an expensive startup cost and maintenance cost.
I'm looking for something that's under 1k lbs with me and 150+ hp.
Any ideas??? There has to be something i'm not seeing. I would freaking love to get into GT racing, but I don't think there is anything affordable for me.
I'm willing to place 10k down for the bare stuff not including the trailer, it's just I want to keep it cheap.
Vintage Caterham (Lotus 7 clone) racing.
A guy here in Austin does it. His annual expenses are what my AX costs were last year. He only goes to Hallet, TWS, and the MSRs but :
Its still wheel to wheel racing, but there is no contact allowed so no $$$ for crash damage. Cars are easy on tires, durable, dependable, fun to drive, and rule book is concrete (no rules creep)
A buddy here does it in SCCA and NASA's autox crap. He has a focus engine in his, I can't say I really like them. Also, Solo Vee's seem a hell of a lot more fun! I want fun/fast too haha

You are kidding about the Formula(solo) V right? Get a Kart before a V.
I hate Vee's. And F500s. They obnxious buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz that never dies. If I had my way the classes would be dead in Solo. The only reason they are still around is people who can't afford formula fords keep racing them.
Sounds like F1000 would be a perfect fit for what you want performance wise. Car + driver min weight is 1000 lbs. The 1000cc motorcycle engines car get over 150 hp. The downside is the class is pretty new (at least in the US) and there is not much market for used cars that I know of. And new cars from the Likes of Stohr and Phoenix run you 30k for a full car.
I guess tin tops are just too slow for you but there are lots of well prepped Honda Challenge or Improved Touring cars within your budget.

my buddy races Pro7, he's continually bugging me to get into it. You can get into an FB for <10k thats pretty much the only one of your requirements that are met
