I lose (tire pictures)

Went to streets of willow

2-week old tires, BFgoodrich g-force T/A KDW-2

1000 miles on them before the track.... some people suggested I take my bald yokohama avs es100s on the track, but I didn't think they would last, so I decided to get the BFgoodrichs.

Bad choice

And that's the tire that's in "better" condition

Sigh.

The good news is, I improved my time by 2 seconds, and didn't need to "follow" anyone to do so

But this track event cost me $675 because of the two dead tires, and the replacements I bought to drive on

yeah he stayed on the track.....the horrible chunking is pretty much due to overheating unshaved never-heat cycled soft compound tires. I've read of hoosiers getting corded after 1 day's use, but never heard of street radials seeing the same accelerated wear. I chunked up 2 month old s03s at streets but nowhere as bad or deep as this.

edit: look at the sidewall, does that top half look like wear from the sidewall rolling over?

Dude, that sucks. Lapping days take a toll on fairly new street tires, especially those with soft compounds. Tires like the Azenis and shaved MX's do so well because they have a much harder compound to resist that kinda damage. Heck, with the Azenis, I drove a practically bald set around a roadcourse, and it held up fine.

they stall0wned the yokohamas big time, but the falken azenis sports are still better. I haven't tested them out in the rain, since it never rains out here in socal, so I don't know about wet traction. Would I get these tires again? Not for the track, I got them because I thought they would out-last the yokohamas in the long run... sigh.. They're pretty expensive too, you can probably get some Toyo Proxes T1S for cheaper

It looks like the tire rolled over a little too much. What tire pressure was he running?

not sure, but I thought so too when I noticed it after he came in from one of the later sessions in the day but another friend said it was ok.

I didn't check his pressures throughout the day, and I'm not sure if he was doing it himself but I did look at them after most if not all the sessions to see where it was wearing and it never crossed over on the sidewall until the last session or two when he came with what you see above.

Probably from overdriving and too much heat. This will happen to a tire with a lot of tread when it gets heated up and driven too hard.

So what do you do to prevent this. I just got S03's and hope to go to another HPDE this year at Limerock and do not want to completely toast them. I want to push the car but would like to have some tires to drive home on.

In my experience, the S-03s hold up very well under heat and track conditions. Like all street tires, they lose grip when really hot, but I've never seen S-03s chunk.

They look a little over inflated. See how the centre is chucked away? As for the edge, looks like your understeered your way around the track. Maybe run some more caster and 1 deg more neg camber. Also looks like a case of soft sidewalls.

The over inflation might make sense, and this is common to stop a tire from rolling over. However, I don't understand how the caster is going to help ---> and the tire should be able to survive with less camber...

I still think it is a combination of too much tread depth and over driving....
