I got bored on the highway tonight

... and I was thinking about autox. I started thinking about how important it is to get as close to the apex cones as possible and thought that it would help me consentrate on the road and get a little more experience if I tried to drive as close to the lane markers as possible. I would drive to the left of the lane until I felt the reflection bumps and then back off as little as possible and try to maintain that distance as long as possible. After that I would move to the right of the lane and do the same thing.

Does this seem like a valid excercise or do you all think I am just wasting my time?

Was it fun?

I like to try to put my wheels right on the dummy dots and see how long I can keep it there as I drive down the freeway, especially in turns. I tell myself I need to be able to put the wheels exactly where I want them, to justify it. But, I think it does help, I think, at least to develop confidence.

I just sleep while I'm driving on the highway. Kidding.

For AX, I don't think there is anything you can do driving-wise wot help your racing. Sure riding the rumble strip edge, or the baby turtle (dummy dots, moron markers, reflectors etc etc) lets really know where the edge of your car is, but its not like you try to go around the autocross course "basing" every cone (ok, you might, but its pretty risky)

After an evo school I asked for on the road things to practice, and the only one I got was when driving move your focal point to the horizon. It will get you used to looking farther ahead, and it will be really uncomfortable for awhile. But it helps, when you get on an AX course you'll find your eyes farther ahead of the car.

A really good thing to practice while driving every day is to look way down the road as far as you can, and never fixate on the back of the car in front of you. Try not to look at one spot for more than 2 seconds. Keep your eyes up. scan the mirrors often. when you catch your self looking at the cars bumper in front of you smack yourself in the head

go out in the country and practice your apexes and such on curves where you can see and make sure no other cars are coming.

I considered doing slaloms with the construction barrels...though I don't think the po-po would be too thrilled if I did that.

+1 on that. Looks like it would be fun. I always imagine what people would do if I started doing that.
