Got the car back!

The transmission blew up as explained in this thread.

And now it's back!

So this makes transmission configuration #3.

#1 was the M2Y4 5th gen tranny with stock open differential.

#2 was the M2F4 4th gen tranny with Quaife LSD and 4.85 final drive. That's the one that blew up. Final drive broke, fragged the counershaft, locked the transmission, etc.

#3, the new setup, is a mix of the gearset and stock 4.266 final drive from the first tranny with the Quaife LSD and good snychros from the 2nd transmission.

So it's a M2Y4 5th gen tranny with Quaife LSD, all in a 4th gen M2F4 case basically.

The car feels a bit tammer now and slower revving but that's okay. Still feels quick. That 4.85 FD was a bit too high strung. The gas milage will be much better now too. Next time I would go with a 4.74 FD from a better company. One with stronger teeth..

Now I can go 145+ instead of 130 and no more 4850rpm going 80mph in 5th.

My new years resolution is to not blow up this transmission again.

Cliffnotes: Tranny blew up and was rebuilt.

What kind of gear ratio combination do you have, exactly? I'm thinking of building a frankentranny next summer for my Si.

Right now I just have the regular 5th gen gearset with the stock final drive. It just happens to be a in 4th gen case.

5th Gen M2Y4:
1 - 3.285
2 - 1.956
3 - 1.344
4 - 1.034
5 - 0.812
FD - 4.266

Ah. I was thinking of throwing longer 4th and 5th gears from an S into mine for the freeway mileage; but now that I've driven on the track, I don't know if I want 3rd and 4th to be farther apart, or even 4th and 5th for that matter.

^^ You'll be fine as long as you get a final drive with strong gears.

And then that will throw you into DP for Solo2 too. Ask Paul about DP....

For some reason I keep losing to him. Hmm.

Actually SM allows gearing changes, and swaps from a Prelude on the same line in SP would be legal under Update/Backdate so he could actually run DSP.

Was the 4.85 final drive a custom made one? What about the 4.74 one that you're thinking about getting? Who is a better company? Houseman?

4.85 was made by Houseman. They arn't bad products, although I am lead to believe the teeth configuration isn't quite as strong.

The 4.74 I'm thinking of is Prodrive.

It's a 4.714. Not a big difference, but at least get the ratio right.

I don't see this on Prodrive's website. Is it something they custom build too?

I got it through a group buy. It is a 4.714 FD, not 4.74.
