1. I washed my car (30 minutes)
2. After drying it off, I detailed it with a general dissolvent and 3M tar, sap, wax, and bug remover (it does it all and very effectively). (1 hour)
3. Then after all the dirt was off and the car was dried, I clayed with Meguiars for about (1.5 hours)
4. Then I used Meguiars #9 scratch remover. I didnt work well. There's a trick to using it but i forgot. (45 minutes)
5. Then i followed with a coat of Meguiars #7 Show car glaze. You have to let it the oil in the polish dry for at least 20 minutes.(45 minutes0
6. Then finally, I finished with 2 coats of Meguiars #26 High Tech Yellow Wax. (1 hour).
Total Time = 5.5 hours...not bad considering all the stuff i did and the amount of care i put into it. I'd say I do this once every month to month and a half. What about anyone else? What is your celaning regimen?

i thought youre supposed to wash the car after using the clay bar?
it takes me about an hr and a half to wash my car and about 10 minutes to pat it dry.

well, normally you wouldnt need to wash again AFTER the claying. at least not with the meguiars set because of the quick detailer thats used with it. it is possible to go directly to polish or wax or just leave it finished after a clay bar. but if ur paranoid like me, u would want to clean the tiny deposits that might still be around after claying. washing would be a real waste of time, effort, soap, and water to do this part. normally the thing i would do next is use my meguiars step #1 paint cleaner or for anyone else, any kind of surface prep if u r gona be waxing. if not, then i wouldnt even bother doing anything more after claying.
I always wash the car again after I clay bar. It helps get rid of all the little crap left over when you're done. It's not like it doesn't alrady take forever to do so washing the car again is no big deal.

i took a look at meguiars website and from what i read it seems like the clay bar is a detailing tool, it is meant to be used on areas that have visible gunk, and the paint cleaning thing is used for the rest of the car? i think its a bad idea to rub a piece of clay that has gunk embeded in it on the surface of the car.

no no no... ok, first the clay bar is strictly used for cleaning/detailing only. its used to remove micro deposits that r almost invisible to the human eye. its NOT used for cleaning up gunk like tar and bugs. thats what the basic washing is for. next time u finish washing ur car adn dried it, glide a clean hand across and im almost positive that u will feel tiny deposits and sand link bumps on the paint even though it looks perfectly clean and shinny. that stuff u feel can not be removed by washing alone. and that is what the clay bar is specifically made for; to clean those micro deposits.
as for the step #1 paint cleaner, it is used for cleaning AND preparing. it does the same job as the clay bar but with not as good results. BUT unlike the clay bar it also helps hides minor swirls and imperfections thats a must before polishing and waxing.
so the clay bar is strictly for cleaning, does an awesome job. good for big clean ups (once or twice a year).
the paint cleaner cleans too but not as well as the clay bar. good for use for minor clean ups. mainly for preparing the cars surface to be followed immidiately by polish and wax.
I am a little insane with cleaning and detailing my car also, but my question is should you use the clay bar everytime you are preping the car or only when it needs it? Will the clay bar hurt if you use it everytime or should you only test to see if it needs it and then use it?

hey, dont clay bar when its not needed. i mean its not like ur going to wax after every wash. u should probably clay bar 2-3 times a year. but it doesnt hurt to clay bar that often, ull jsut get tired of doing it. as for every time u wax, i personally do all the steps (clean, plosh, wax) evey time i wax. but i dont wax that often. what i use it Meguiars Quick Wax so i keep my current wax job healthy and renewed without actually completely redoing the surface again. i use quick detailer before i use my quickwax to remove contaminants without using a clay bar or paint cleaner.
