roof of my 92

Well the roof of my 92 accord looks like it has seirous white cancer. Its a black car, but i think the clearcoat is long gone and the roof just keeps getting worse. I can't really afford a full out paint job right now, so is there anywhere just to make my roof look black again without looking crappy? That turtle black wax only last for a day or two

Without seeing anything, you definitely do have clearcoat failure. Looks right salt stains right? Anyway, the only way to get rid of it completely would be to get a repaint, and without doing so, you won't get any decent results. Best solution I can think of would be lessen the oxidation with a paint cleaner and a polish, and apply a sealant to minimze the clear coat loss. Do you have a machine or are you going to do everything by hand?

claybar ... meg's deep paint cleaner .. and another coat of wax ?

consider taking it to a shop for wetsand / re-clear maybe? who knows... if they can wetsand down the clear and get it new looking bonus.

or just replace with a glass moonroof.

The problem with wet sanding on a surface that has no clearcoat is that you'll be scratching the surface of the paint directly. That means you'll have to repaint it anyway.

Try Meguiar's Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner.

oh what .. I didnt know that hte clear coat would entirely weather away leaving the paint surface unprotected..

look at the meguiars 3step link in the faq (top of detail forum section) .. i wrote it but theres some photo's tha tmay look like your roof does ... megs deep crystal paint cleaner did wonders ... broght it back with a new shine, and the wax on top .. hot tomally!

Colin, does your roof look like this?

(image taken from jrouvier from Autopia.org)

And Anthony, unfortunately clearcoats can be completely eaten away exposing the paint surface.

My dad bought a truck that was terribly faded like that. I tried several polishes by hand and with my PC but nothing was helping the paint. As a last resort, I went over the hood & roof (the worst parts) by hand with some rubbing compound. That helped a good bit, then I had some old Meguiars' Cleaner Wax lying around and I put on two coats of that and it helped tremendously. If you try this and get the paint looking decent, I would just keep it waxed more often than usual until you can afford that new paint job!

Prime example of how paint cleaners help with oxidation
