After I waxed and buffed (by hand) my car yesterday I noticed that I couldn't get it all off. There seemed to by a light, greasy-looking residue left that wouldn't buff out. Any idea what causes this? I'm thinking either I put too much on or else I didn't let it dry long enough. I had to leave earlier than I wanted so it only dried for about 1 1/2 hours.
The whole process was wash & dry, claybar, quick wash & dry, wax & buff with High Tech yellow was #26.
I get that problem as well when I apply too much wax. In general with most waxes and sealants, a little goes a long way. With pure caranuba wax you only need a dab or so to cover a large panel like the entire sunroof. With synthetic waxes you only need about a dime-sized droplet for an entire door. With sealants like Klasse SG, using a whole quarter-sized droplet would be sufficient to cover half the entire car. Technologly has really come a long way to the point where waxes are quite efficient.
I've always thoguht that streaky, greasy look was a sign of uneven application. I've decided that 'dime sized spot' is a bad idea. That leaves you a little more than a dime sized spot that you have to rub over your entire car. I've found that a straight line, or an "X" works better - gives you more contact area and makes it easier to apply evenly.
Well, I wouldn't be surprised if I just put too much on. I had this huge jug I was using so I applied it by putting it on the towel first, not the car. It was definitely a liberal application and I tried to overlap as much as possible. I'll try less next and see what happens. Thanks for the confirmation.
I used to use soo much wax before....always had a hard time getting the stuff out. I used the same thing as you did. Meguires Hi Tech Wax. Like everyone else said, a little does go a long way. I didn't know this until my friend and I were comparing techniques and his was better.
