Why didn't you ask your buddy what it's for and how to use it?
I know Chemical guys makes a clay bar that's purple. The clay bar pulls out the contaminants in the paint. It won't correct scratches, remove oxidation or anything of that nature. To use it you'll need a lubricant. After washing and drying the car spray the panel you wish to work on and rub the clay on the panel. The clay should grab as it picks up dirt. Once the paint is clean it'll feel smooth. Wipe off the lubricant and inspect. When the clay gets dirty just fold it over to expose a new part of the clay. Repeat as needed.
