I know it's been covered slightly before, but my car is getting resprayed right now. No wax/polish for 6 months
I'm getting a clearbra on ASAP after the respray, that's a given as I drive so much. I called 3M and they said it wouldn't cause any problems w/ the new paint. That they recommend it be installed as soon as the car came out of the dryer
So with that said, what should I do for the 6 months that I can't clay/wax/polish the paint?
Is there a specific wash you recommend?
I live in Ohio... pretty bad salt/winters... so any help in that area would be greatly appreciated as well.
We meet again....... you should wash your car with comet house hold cleaner and 400 grit sand paper....
Seriously though..... is it okay to put on the 3M or is it going to trap in the vapours that wax would? I ask because we are in the same boat planning the same escape so to speak.
Just did some research..... it has to be applied to "fully cured paint". That means you shouldn't install for 2 to 6 months depending on who you talk to.
The best answer you'll get is from the person who painted your car. They're the ones who know what has been done, and what needs to be done in order to keep the car in good shape. 6 months does seem a long time, but are you sure that your car will be in an oven? Because an oven cures the paint and allows it to be polish/wax ready out of the shop.
If not, then the safest and most protective layer you could put on your car would be a glaze, which is an extremely mild and fine polish designed to improve gloss and not seal the paint. Just wash the car normally and apply a layer of glaze at most.
Your nuts if you put on the car bra, new paint is soft and every crease on the nose bra will put an imprint in your paint!
wait at least a couple-3 months before doing anything like that..
I got my car painted in march and when I was houseboating 3 weeks ago (just over 3months) my fingernail put a line in the clearcoat on the hood ... the paint stays soft for a long time ..
Dont wash it with a pressure washer up close... dont clay for at least amonth..
I went to the wand wash and stood back and just let all the dirt tricle down using the rinse/soap spray/rinse-wax ... didnt get it all clean but after about a month I finally used my sheepskin mitt and made sure the surface had no water beading before I made contact with the surface... so far so good!
Its ready for some clay/wax now though for sure (4months in) ... theres but splatter all over the front, i picked up some huge rock chips but... dont do the bra!
Also, tell the shop to NOT use a buffer on the car ... they swirled my car up before I even got it ... bastards.
^^ The paint shouldn't be THAT soft out of the shop.......... It may feel tacky when you touch your fingernail to it for like 24 hrs...... but should not leave any imprints........ or am I wrong? Sounds like the paint wasn't cured on your car or applied too heavily? Maybe not enough drying time between coats?
or I have some hella strong fingernails ... its pretty small and will most likely buff out .. I'm getting sand scratches appearing all over my trunk lid, im going to have them re-do it come the end of summer when I wont be using my car as much.
I can't remember, but did the shop bake your car when it got repainted Andrew? And it's the clearcoat that can get imprinted...not the pain unless it's a single stage paint job or you've gone through the clearcoat to the paint.
yea it was the clearcoat and no they didnt bake it . ...
I saw nothing to bake the car in at the paint shop ...
It had been in the blaring sun all weekend though , I put it in as much sunlight as possible since the paint job ... I just baby it and make sure I'm delicate .. the rock chips though.. mang they get big on new paint
Kind of sounds that way to me....... or the clear coat is a bit to thick? I am sure that time will help....... the sun idea is a good one IMO........ that should help. I get my car back tomorrow with a baked on painted nose...... I will let you know if I find the same things.
As I understand, if the car is baked it is ready to undergo any and all normal driving conditions. This means no special treatment needed to take care of the paint like waiting for a cetain period of time for the paint to cure. If the car has been baked, then it shouldn't feel tacky because the clearcoat and the basecoat have hardened enough.
I checked it again....... it was placebo effect. It feels stock. But I think that there is still a curing period where the paint fumes will still be escaping...... for me, that is 30 days. If I wax it, the paint will start to lift & bubble. It seems pretty strong though but still smells like fresh paint.
