How to: Removing a pinstripe that is underneath a clear coat
Materials:
2000 Grit Sandpaper
Porter Cable Orbital Buffer
Meguiar's Swirl Remover
Running Water
This past weekend I helped my friend remove a pinstripe that was under a clear coat meaning that the stripe couldn't be peeled off and when you ran your hand over it, it felt lot more embedded into a paint than a regular stick-on pinstripe. The work was done on a WHITE CAR so I don't know how everything will turn out on cars with darker colors.
1. Fold the 2000 grit sandpaper to about the same width as the pinstripe.
2. With the water running, gently go back and forth along the pinstripe. No need to apply too much pressure, let the sandpaper do the work, and sooner or later the pinstripe will start breaking up.
3. There will be an unsightly haze over the area where the pinstripe used to be. Now take out the orbital buffer and work the Swirl Remover into the paint. Repeat until the haze is gone.
4. Once you are done, the area should feel smooth and look as shiny as the surrounding area.
5. Congratulations! You've gotten rid of that tacky pinstripe that made your car look like it was from the 70's...lol
