Cut Valve cover - cleaning engine bay

I'm looking to detail my engine bay & have read through 10-15 posts about what to do, but have yet to hit one that deals with engines that have the valve cover cut. If there is one, sorry but I couldn't find it

I have cam gears and the valve cover was cut off on the side to allow adjustment. Do I need to take any extra precautions and/or avoid getting this part wet? Will I have to worry about getting the cleaner (likely going to us simple green) on the timing belt?

thanks!

Sorry but, what do you mean that the valve cover was cut? Are you talking about the portion where it goes directly above the cam gears? Regardless, it wouldn't hurt covering that portion up. I don't think there are any electrical wires in that area - just mechanical gears and what not. However I would take the precaution to cover that section up if I were you.

yeah, the driver side vertical section was removed to gain access to the cam gears. I ended up covering it to be on the safe side.

I still have some oil build up in there, don't know why, most likely one of the camshaft seals. Damn it. Oh well.

I was pretty impressed, sprayed the bay down with simple green (50/50 mix) and scrubbed a little, then hosed off. looks 100% better. I'll probably spend a little more time getting into the nooks and crannies next time.

What areas did you cover up?

my bad about the photos. I was doing it at 6:15am prior to meeting up with the club. Next time I do it I'm going to spend more time & also do photos likely.

KB798> I covered the CAI intake, the fuse box, distributor cap, alternator, and the opening at the cam gears. I think that the fuse box might not have needed covering, but I was a bit precautious. Ended up letting it sit for about 15 minutes and then drove for about 45 min to 1 hour down to the show w/no ill effects.

What about the other random electrical connections that were in the open?

I let those fend for themselves... honestly I thought that all the other connectors have a boot and what not over them that will protect them. Did I get lucky or is there no other ones to worry about?

ive always pressure washed my engine bay and never covered anything up. as long as you use common sense and do not directly spray the alternator, air filter and the couple of wire harnesses you will be fine.

Personally, I'd rather cover everything up, but that'll leave nothing to clean . I'm just scared of creating a short or something.

just remember this?

Q:what is the difference between washing your engine bay and driving through a heavy rain storm?

A:none, reason is..when your drive through a heavy rain storm most likely your entire engine bay gets wet. i know this is for sure because mine is always dirty after a heavy rain storm and somehow all my electrical crap is still fine

it goes like this, if your worried about messing your electrical stuff up in your engine bay, then why would they put so much electrical junk in there in the first place if they knew it was goin to get wet?

Never thought of it that way...nice comparison .

Oh and in Southern California, our "Storm of The Year!" reports only occur when the rainfall is 2" or more .

interesting, but they do have the timing belt covered completely...still curious if it matters if it gets wet or not
