cleaning engine bay?

My friend told me to do this but I was a little skeptical so I wanted to see if anybody knows if this will work or not:

Spray Simple Green all over engine bay. Then spray Tire Foam all over engine bay. Shut hood and drive around. Clean?

you have a spark plug cover so you should be fine. I would go to the store and buy some engine degreaser and douse it before spraying soap on it to help knock loose the grime. just make sure when you are spraying not to target the distributor or the alternator. A little water won't hurt them.

I thought only certain engines had spark plug covers?

Hey corpuszero,

FIRST make sure that the engine is cold!!!

The most effective method that I have used is spraying the engine with a degreaser minding electronics, then scrub. Then start the engine and spray it down with water once again minding the electronics. After that I use a vinyl protestant on the hoses, plastics, Ext....

Hope this helps, let me know!!

Thanks,

I use Fantastic oven cleaner. It stinks but it works. Simple Green works too, but you have to make sure to get it off the paint before it dries.

I tried something similar to that once and it left spots everywhere. Do it right and clean it when it's cold.

htran187: On quoting cb7tuner ("cb" accord guy here)

Anyway, when I picked up the bb6, it came from Washington & got snow & water all over - solution: Simple Green FTW! It's environmentally friendly & you can let it drain down the "sink" without worry.

This is my method (tried both on the bb6 & cb, no issues to date):

** Prep engine (make sure all fuses, connections, rubber boots, electrical tape are seated / applied - well, you know what I mean)

1) Apply when engine is cold & off
2) Spray generously AVOIDING the alternator & battery
(electrical connectors are fine just don't focus the spray on there)

3) Scrub with light, medium-sized brush & old tooth brush on problem areas, applying additional Simple Green as needed.

4) Rinse thoroughly with water, repeat process a second time, if needed.
5) Start motor immediately & let motor run / idle for at least 15-20 minutes to burn off the water.

Total time should take no more than 20 minutes or so.

Hope that helps

Old toothbrushes are wire brushes are good to help scrub all of the grime.
