cleaning dash

i have some white overspray on the dash like material on the side. the part where when you open your door, you see your vent that leads into your door. that surface has some white spray on there and i want to clean it off but it wont come off and im not sure what to use to get it off. i tried armorall cleaner wipes but its not strong enough. what would be good to take that stuff off and not harm the material?

Try rubbing alcohol and if that doesn't work, try Goo Gone. Afterwards use a protectant to protect the surface again.

I've used it before and haven't had anything come off, nor did I notice any faded marks. If you're in doubt, use a small inconspicuous area to test whatever product you're going to use first. If no residue appears, then you'll be fine.

The alcohol will dry it out, but if you reapply some vinyl protectant immediately afterwards then you should not have any adverse effects.

Yes that's very true.

If you're wondering what kind of protectant you should use I'll tell you about the bottle of Klasse Vinyl, Leather, Rubber And Plastic Cleaner Protectant I purchased. I used on my window moldings and was not that impressed with the results. It coats on as a nice, black satin finish but when it dries it ends up looking very..."dry." As for protection, it was hard to tell if there were any adverse effects or deterioration of the molding, but I think I want to try Meguiar's No.40. I wish I could show you what I mean, but I guess it's just one man's opinion.

i just use armorall wipes. works like a charm and my dash stays super shiny and wet looking for a longgg time. i guess ill use some rubbing achohol to take off the overspray then let the rubbing achohol dry off then apply my armorall wipes to protect it again.

I've tried about 10 different locally available vinyl/plastic protectants in the last few years and have been unsatisfied with all of them. Armor All, Lexol, Son of a Gun (don't ask), Eagle 1, you name it. They all are either too shiny, or make the dash grey or brown after a while.

So the other day I'm my local meg's shop and they finally have Meg's #40 (and NXT). Got home, tried it out, and I am hooked. This is BY FAR the best stuff I have used. Sprays on and wipes off like any other, but the finish is unbelievable. It somehow enhances the black in the dash to make it look new. Shine-wise it's still a bit more reflective than I'd like, but still far less glare than other brands. It has been on for 2 weeks and still looks great. Lastly, like all other Meg's products, I love the smell. It's kind of a new car smell, but better.

Next on the list is Aerospace 303.

It's probably questionable in the long run; Armor-All could make your dash fade into a different color overtime. How long have you been using it for?

gweenz: I love #40 also. It is the only rubber & vinyl product I let touch my prelude. The 303 doesn't give the shine that you get with the other protectants but for the price I'll stick with #40.

MidNiteMysT: The effects of ArmorAll products have been debated for a long time but I've never seen them with my own eyes. I grew up helping my dad wash his cars and he always had tons of ArmorAll in the garage so thats what I grew up using. I used it on my truck religiously (about 6 years ago) and never saw any harmful effects or browning.

After talking with some professional detailers about different car care products I decided to quit using ArmorAll. I quit liking the shine also (the dash reflecting onto the windshield is bad!).

Armour All does fade and sucks a**. Meguiars is the best by far. For the over spray problem, the trick is something that 3m makes that you would never think of using. It is an adhesive gum that is similar to chewing gum used to put posters on walls without damaging on removal. I can't remember the exact name but it sells for $3 a pack. Just roll a ball of it and press onto the over spray and pull straight back and the tiny droplets will come off the vinal like magic.

Takes a little time but will not leave any harmful residue that a harsh cleaner will. Rubbing alcohol will dry out your dash a little.

PS. you can buy the 3M at any stationary store.

The Armor All issue is really more subjective than anything else. Some people really like the shine, others don't. I don't, and it doesn't protect or beautify very long which requires you to apply it more than I like. Under certain light levels it can also make a black dash look brown or grey. As far as being bad for your vinyl and plastic, not really sure. a few years ago a local interior trim shop guy told me you should not use Armor All because the chemicals in it will eventually age your dash more quickly, causing it to fade and crack. He was not trying to sell me anything else (they didn't carry any such products that I saw) so I trust him. Who knows, really. I dont use it because of how it looks.

I've never seen Meguiar's No.40 at any Pep Boys before. Can't hurt to look, but I think you're stuck buying it from either online or maybe try a local auto body supply shop or Napa?

i ended up using rubbing alcholol and that sticky stuff to get off the overspray. i used rubbing alcholol to take off the protectant to get to the material then i used the sticky stuff and rubbed it on the surface and it got a lot of it off but it didnt get everything off so i used some rubbing alchohol too. then i put protectant on it again. from what i can see, it seemed to cause no damage.
i have the honda dash protectant, im wondering if any of you guys used it before and what you thought of it.

From what I understand, the "OEM" dash protectants and other accessories for the car are like rebadged products. Meaning, they're the same in quality and performance compared to aftermarket products. As to what specific product is comparable? I don't know since I've never used it, but if it were to be in a scale from no protectant to say Meguiar's No.40, then I'd say it's in the middle-upper area.
