CF Hood maintenance

I've got a couple spots on my CF hood...an it's generally starting to look noticeably bad....probably from the engine heat w/ the blower what do you guys use to maintain your CF hoods? what wax, polish etc? everyone talks about reclearcoating the hood....is that what I need to do?

Can you take pics? I've never waxed my VIS hood and it's looks brandnew for a 3 year old hood.

^^ you're not boosted tho

it looked great up until I put the blower on....up until then, there were only two spots on the hood. I think that one of them was caused by bird poop on the hood while it was getting the blower put on, which wasn't cleaned up before the install

I think the extra heat has really affected it, but I may be wrong. I'll try to get some pics later

You should jump in on beaty's offer with OEM hood insulators.

Is there any sign of warping or is just image spots?

Wet sand it when it gets spotty and re clear it is basically all you can do. I havent found any "wax" or "secret sauce" that keeps it up. I sold my old hood for 2/3 of the price of the new one :P If you can keep that up, you'll be okay!

Well my carbon fiber hood is a Fiber Image hood, and so far its been holding up ok from the blower. Let me tell you though, it reaks when the blower gets hot though! I can always smell the hood like when it was brand new so i think the extra heat from the blower definitly doesnt help!

If it's heat that's causing problems...then consider installing some sort of custom hood insulator? Otherwise, waxing the underside of the hood could help, but I think using a durable sealant might be better since it'll be withstanding a lot of heat. Collinite might work...

Is only half the hood like that? Because that looks like oxidation.

Ive only had my hood for like acouple months and was considering gettin the hood insulator for it. Ive seen hoods that have turned yellow. Im guessin if you want ur hood to keep its color have it wetsanded and get it clear coated before puttin it on.

wet sanding wont work, thats a sign of the clean coat lifting. the heats causeing the clear to loose adheasion to the CF hood. theres a number or reasions, there could be something in the CF so when the hood heats up it sweats and its trying to get out but the clear sceals it in, soat of like a pimple on ur face. best thing to do it take it to a bodyshop and have them dry sand it down with 600 grit then reclear coat it with a good clear, but after they sand off the clear theyll need to bake it in the booth for a while then clean then clear.

My hood does not have any clear. it's the gel coat that is oxidizing. The pic I took was just a comparison from oxidation to compounded side. I notice I have to keep a good coat of wax on the hood to keep that from happening. I'm going to have it cleared soon.

Oh man. that looks bad bro. My last VIS hood turned out like that, I ended up getting a new one..

shop around my area even recommanded me the samething.. they said cost of getting it wet-sanded and re-clear coated just like new would cost more than the actual hood.

to bad ur guys not in the orlando area or able to ship ur hood, i could swing it for $100, and thats 3 coats of clear but no labor, that would just cover the cost of the clear coat and sand paper

I can confirm that the JDM hood insulator will work on a 5th gen VIS OEM hood. Mine was a perfect fit
