I plan on detailing the exterior of my car soon...this is what I was planning on doing:
1. Wash - Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner
2. ClayBar
3. 3M or Meguiars Swirl/Scratch Remover
4. Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish (Step 2 of 3 step process)
5. Meguiars Deep Crystal System Carnuba Wax (Step 3 of 3 step process)
If I used the Meguiars Paint Cleaner (step 1 of the 3 step process) would this be overkill? Do the claybar and paint cleaner do approximately the same thing?
So use the clay bar INSTEAD of the Meguiars Paint cleaner?
yes, just use the clay bar instead of the cleaner. The additional benefits of using a cleaner afterwards are so minimal it would just be a waste of time.
as for what towels to use, ive already recommended some in the other thread... just make sure you use a different towel for each step so you wont mix products into a single towel.

I dunno... I kinda disagree. I clay'd mine yesterday and then did the paint cleaner after that and I could tell a noticable difference. Maybe I'm just picky but I was still getting stuff off the car... lol

I'm with April. The clay bar will remove contaminents, overspray etc. But the paint cleaner will remove oxidation, fine scratches and swirlmarks too. The clay won't get rid of that stuff. And afterall... your paint can never be TOO clean... I do both.

OK, I will do the Clay and the Paint Cleaner (making the whole 3 step process)...but I will also be using a 3m swirl remover...is this fine...I mean, can you do TOO much to the paint?

well over time you can definitley do too much for the paint. But for what you plan to do right now, its definitley not too much. 3M SMR is pretty low on the abraisive scale. But i still dont think you need to do the paint cleaner step with the SMR. both products are doing nearly the same job for surface preparation. However, it wont hurt to try, so you might as well do both this time and judge for yourself if you need to do it again next time you detail your car

Might as well try it all, and get it all done at once...I am gonna spend like 8 hours on it, so what is 1 more, right?
