Question of Price

I have a friend in OKC that has a running B20A out of his '88 Prelude. Neither one of us have a clue about price. So, we decided I'd try to do some research and then shoot him a price.

The engine runs good, and has a strong idle. The odo has 193K on the clock, but we don't know if it is the original engine.

So...here is the $10 question. How much is that thing worth? Just bottom end and head?

<$500. Get on http://www.car-part.com - the engines aren't super plentiful, but they aren't rare, and they aren't exactly coveted and none are in terribly great condition.

I bought an entire 3g chassis and two motors and an assload of spare parts for <$1k once.

Actually, the 3rd gen B20A is rare as of now.... There have been people waiting on that engine for at least 6 months. Since no importer has been able to get their hands on it.

Though being it's not such a powerful engine from the get go, (142bhp, 135tq) it's so much smoother then the stock B20A5 (130hp, 130tq)

However... you can pick them up, once found, for around 650-800 dollars.

I was thinking the A5. car-part.com has 4 pages of results. Looks like there are still some decent ones out there. I'm sure the JDM importers will have trouble as most of them are off the road in Japan, the ones that are the road are probably collectors that aren't going to let them go.

You can always get an A5 and do a little work to it and get to A power levels or better. With the miles that would be on any A or A5 it would be wise to rebuild if you want it to last for any length of time.

Well...I'm pretty sure the B21A1 is going to be beat up pretty good. I haven't taken the head off yet, but if the cylinder walls are toast I'll have to resleave it. I guess I'll just have to see what he'll take for the B20A(5?) and go from there.

Which ever route I choose, I'll go new timing belt, and whatever gaskets I can get to.

Just get a B20A? from the junkyard. They already come with Iron Sleeves. The FRM's in the B21 are very strong though they chew up the rings like no tomorrow.

Stock B20A?'s have been known to hold well over 250whp on a stock block.
