Overheating...

My 88 Si is overheating, and I can't tell why. Actually, I don't think it's really overheating, I think the temperature gauge is wrong. The gauge climbs so quickly to the H that it doesn't seem possible for the engine to get that hot, that quickly.

The thermostat has been replaced, and the problem still occurs (intermittently). It was fine for about a month, until yesterday, the temp gauge shot up again. Both the radiator and reserve tank are full, oil level is ok, the car runs fine otherwise. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What could be causing this problem?

Thanks,
Mike

The only thing I can think of offhand is flush your radiator. Or it may be 2 far gone for that and need to be replaced. Also you can check your fluid for efficiency... Good luck!

Again, I think the engine is not actually overheating. Because the temperature gauge climbs rapidly when this occurs, I believe the problem is electrical. Not to mention that we drive the car in this condition, and the head hasn't melted yet!

Any ideas where I should start looking, which electrical components could be malfunctioning? The thermostat has already been replaced.

mine too! i replaced the thermostat thinking that would cure it, but not luck. do you have your battery relocated? i think it might be a bad ground, but im not possitive. it used to do it all the time, till i grounded the tranny to the chassis and now it does it less.

The car is stock (battery in stock location), except for a removed intake resonator. Let me know if you find out why it happens on yours, I'd appreciate it. My IM is Crouching Turbo, I'm always online.

Check your temp sensor(more)

This is located next to the thermostat housing...there are two sensors...the Left one as you are looking at it(I think) is the temp sensor...this is like 35 dollars from Honda...that could be your problem.
