D2J3 vs D2J4 - Electric vs Mechanicle Speedometer

Right now my 89 SI 4WS is running:

- JDM B20A motor
- USDM Intake Manifold (ITM)
- USDM Exhaust manifold (EM) [with all o2 sensors, which connect to the (EM)]
- USDM Transmission D2J3

The transmission is beginning to slip and go bad however.

I have a D2J4 transmission that came with my B20A when I bought it, but I was never able to put it in since the speedometer that goes along with it is electric. and the car is set up for mechanical.

How would I go about putting in the D2J4 transmission and having a speedometer?

Your transmission can't be slipping if it's a d2j3. Manual transmissions don't slip like automatics do. Your clutch is probably what's slipping.

Also, the d2j4 use a mechanical cable just like the d2j3 does. Are you sure it's not a d2a4?

Thank you for the corrections, let me explain what is going on a little more.

When I drive the car, it is EXTREMELY hard to shift into 2nd gear. It will engage into 2nd at low RPM's, but at higher RPM's it won't catch until the RPM's have dropped.

Also there seems to be something slightly wrong with 3rd gear. It engages into 3rd fine, at any RPM, but as you drive, sometimes around 3500 RPM it feels like it "grabs better" and pulls harder, but only sometimes, other times it is OK.

The clutch feel fine to.

here are some pictures of the Transmission stampss, and the D2J4 speedometer.

What you described about shifting into 2nd sounds like the clutch is slipping. I've never experienced anything like what you are talking about with 3rd though.

Still sounds like a clutch problem to me. It's either worn or oil has gotten onto the clutch disk causing it to slip. The 2nd gear problem could be a combination of clutch and synchros. But I'll say it again, manual transmissions do not slip.

That is definitely an electronic vss. Most likely, the owner of the car that transmission came out of reused his electronic vss. I have no experience myself with doing this, but I've read that you can convert them from mechanical to electronic, and vice versa.

When you say electronic vvs, I take it you mean he is using the electronic speedometer right? I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

Sorry, yes, electronic speedo. The vss (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is the part you have pictured. Technically, the vss for the cable driven speedo is mounted to the rear of the gauge cluster, and the pat that is mounted to the transmission is called something else. But for simplicity most of us call that a vss as well.
