Bearing Noise

I have a 2000 base model auto/ss with 82k miles (original owner). I get a noise that is loudest at around 35mph. It sounds somewhat between a washing machine and repeating the word "Roar" softly and quickly to match the wheels rpm. It is not the brakes, not the tires and not the wheel bearing. Rotated tires, checked brakes, replaced passenger side wheel bearing and axle (should of found this site first). Anyway the sound is the same whether you are turning left or right or going straight. It is louder under load and ceases when coasting in neutral. It kinda reminds me of when a ring and pinion were bad in my Renault years ago but much more muffled. With the car on a lift, in gear at idle; the noise cannot be heard. A pyrometer does not show any unusual heat spots when checking accessible shafts, bearings, brakes etc and the car handles fine even at high speeds. Any suggestions?

Well.....

Given that you have the infamous sh*tbox of a transmission, and the sound is not present when the car is in neutral, it would make sense the the source of the noise could be your tranny. Do the rpm's jump up and down while accelerating? Hard, jerking shifts? Trouble going into gear? Check engine light on?

Bearing Noise

Hello and thanks for the reply.

I have had no problems with the tranny, it shifts fine and no engine light or codes to indicate a problem. I'm thinking that it it might be the intermediate shaft bearing.
