alternator died, trying to replace

-my 1991 white prelude lost power. I jumped it with another car and it started. When I removed the battery terminals it no longer kept running.

I am trying to remove the alternator and I already have the power steering pump out and loosened the bolt for the adjustment on the alternator but there isn't a lot of slack. Is there something I am missing ? I do have ac so that belt is part of the system as well but it doesn't seem to be very movable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eric

- I got it out and took it to two different places and they both said it was good. I checked the fuse and that looks fine.

- Will the car still run if the while the engine is on and I remove one of the battery leads. I did this and car stopped running? I am thinking the battery might be bad

- Well, I took the alternator apart and found the shaft was pretty tarnished from the brush. I ran some sand paper to clean it and the when I put it back the car ran fine. I would like to replace brushes, how easy is it to get out of the holder ? I have a solder iron to reconnect them. I am just not sure how to get them out of the casing.
