'90 bumpersag

Please help. The front and rear bumpers of my '90 si are sagging. The rear is sagging from the driver's side behind the wheel well and the front passenger side right under the headlight. How do I get them in place and tighten them back?

Sorry, I missed this question. It depends on why it's sagging. You could have missing fasteners, the bumper cover may be damaged, or the support structure of the car may be bent. Please post pictures of the sagging bumpers and I'll have a better idea of what's causing it.

Hey Colfax,
Thanks for a reply. I would have gotten back sooner, but I live in the snowy midwest. I just cleaned my old baby. Attached are pix of my bumper sag. If you could help in any way, I'd appreciate it!

It appears that you may have some structural damage to either the rear pan or the bumper support, or both. What does the right side look like? You're probably going to have to remove the bumper cover to see what's bent. But I'm sure something is bent. Has the car been in any accidents that you know of?

It's pretty easy to remove the bumper. You just need to unplug the license plate wiring, then remove the phillips screws at the front of the bumper cover, inside the rear of the wheel wells. Then there are four nuts holding the bumper support to the car that you will need to remove. Two of them are accessed from under the car, and the other two are behind the rear panel cover in the trunk. Here is a link to the online factory service manual that shows where the fasteners are. Yours doesn't have the factory rear under spoiler so you can ignore that part...

That's a nasty rust problem you have going. I'm wondering if maybe there isn't a rust problem causing your bumper alignment problems as well.

That is what I am thinking the problem might be, but then the top mount of the rear bumper support is inside the trunk, the lower is outside. It shouldn't be sagging that low unless he has some major rot. Is your trunk damp inside on the drivers side under the carpet in that rear corner after you drive it on a rainy day? If so, then that whole rear quarter might be gone....

Yeah, my trunk does get some moisture in the trunk during the winter. I know I dont have any rust yet because I had the bumper off last summer when I painted the car. But I'm a little worried about having all that water in for the duration of the winter. I think the water is coming in around the tail light gaskets. I'm gonna have to do something about that once things dry out a little.
