My 90 lude(b20a5 manual trans) slung a rod through the block, i have a 88 lude b20a3 carb manual trans that is wrecked, what problems will i have swapping motors i know the engine mounts will work but as far as electronics, can i use the same engine harness ? do i need to change out fuel pumps ? etc, any help will be appreciated !
You re in luck, as long as you don't plan to go turbo. You can actually use the b20a3 block with all of your b20a5 pieces. The only real differences between the blocks is in the rotating assembly...
*The a3 pistons are not dished quite as much as a5 pistons, which gives the a3 a slightly higher compression ratio.
*The a3 rods are smaller, as are the wrist pins and rod bearings.
*Because of the smaller rod bearings, the crank shaft is different.
You can bolt your a5 head directly onto the a3 block. This will also enable you to keep your intake and exhaust manifolds. The smaller rods won't hurt anything unless you are planning to boost in the future. But for n/a applications you will be fine with the a3 block. It's important to use the crank timing gear from your a5 for this setup or your timing will be messed up.
Everything will be bolt-on for this swap. Just remember, the only thing you will be using from the carbie lude will be the short block. Install a new water pump and timing belt tensioner, and you might also want to replace all of the small coolant hoses that run to and around the intake manifold on your a5. Also replace the rubber o-ring on the coolant pipe while you're at it. It's a b!tch to change that once the engine is installed.
