Why use USDM harness over JDM? (H22 swap)

Why do you guys use the USDM harness and modify it to fit the JDM H22? Isnt it easier to use the JDM harness that already comes with the motor?

The only problem I see is that some wires might have to be extended becuase its right-hand-drive.

You would have to extend 50 + wires from one shock tower to the other. The install would look horrible and be extremely time consuming. The only difference between the two harnesses is that the main plugs are on one side instead of the other.

Bottom line, it is just easier.

The JDM Harness is set up for a RHD drive car. The JDM harness goes through the firewall on the LEFT side of the car, the USDM goes through on the right, so there is a lot of lengthening that needs to be done. In addition, the JDM harness is usually cut in half instead of disconnected using the plugs to save time during motor removal, thus making it completley useless. Adapting the USDM harness for use on the JDM motor is really easy, and is detailed in the H22 installation FAQ. In fact, most of the modifications that need to be done are a result of the VTEC sensors, not being JDM.

OK some questions about the H22 swap into an Si.

1. Do you use the H22 or H23 rear engine mount?
2. Which axles do you use?
3. Does any power-steering lines get in the way, under the hood?

I already read that, the questions I asked was about the parts that I was unclear about. All I could get outta that was to use the all H23 motor+tranny mounts.

For the axles, it just says to remove them from the JDM motor, doesn't talk about which ones to use.

Also the VSS, it says to remove it. Do you use the USDM Vss sensor?

thanks for your time

- Use the USDM mounts (all)
- All of the USDM and JDM 5 speed axles are the same (S, Si, VTEC). The instructions tell you to remove the JDM ones because they are usually cut and useless. In addition, you don't have to remove the USDM axles from the hubs, if you follow the Helms.
- The motor removal steps from the Helms includes removal of the VSS from the tranny (as stated, you really SHOULD have this manual to do this swap, so I didn't detail every step for motor removal). The sensor is removed from the tranny instead of disconnecting the power steering line connected to it. This way, the PS system does not need to be rebled. Once the JDM motor/tranny is in place, the USDM VSS (still conencted to USDM PS line) is installed into the tranny.

. . .Clear things up a bit?

Yes, that makes sence. I plan on doing this swap on friend's 4th gen. On my GEN5 there is no P.S. lines going to the VSS, so that was kinda confusing.

Thanks!

The VSS and shift cables have been secured out of the way in this photo before pulling the old motor. Make sure to wrap the VSS gear in a ziploc bag or rag to prevent damaging the teeth! You can't really see the VSS, in this picture (it's kinda obscured by the shift cables), but it is tucked safely out of the way with the PS line attached. Re-bleeding the PS system isn't too tough, just kinda expensive (you have to use Honda-specific PS fluid, which is like 2x the price of normal stuff).
