why are 4 lug to 5 lug spacer conversions such a bad idea?

No arguments here... just trying to see why they're such a bad idea?

Many people use spacers from H&R or Ichiba that bolt to the car and then the wheels bolt to the spacer with no issue at all.

Why are these "spacers" that bolt to a 4x114.3 car that have 5x114.3 bolts sticking out for the wheel to go on it such a bad idea in comparison?

Is there some kind of negative phyisics involved with holding on to 4 bolts but providing 5 out thats the issue?

assuming no ebay specials but a decent brand... (dunno if it exists just asking)

Part of it has to do with the integrity of the adapter, and the forces imposed on it. do you really want all of your engine's power/braking to go through the hub, then the adapter, and finally your wheels?
Then, you have the fact the adapter acts as a spacer. generally, (proper) wheels are designed for the hub face to be in a specific spot, so the wheel has some engineering to ensure the wheel is enforced to accept the weight. adding spacers affects this, as the wheel is receiving a higher weight ratio (think leverage).
for a normal daily driver, you should be okay. if you take it to a track, you want something a little more secure (5-lug conversion, or 4-lug wheels).

If any of this is wrong, feel free to correct me. I am not an engineer, and I am more or less quoting what I (think) I remember from talking to an engineer a long time ago (years) about the subject. there was more to it than this, but these were the main bullet points I remember.
again, this is assuming a real, non-Chinese knock off, adapter.

sounds like a logical enough explanation to me...

but yea for a daily driver... nothing that will ever get any realll stress other than maybe a few highway on ramps that get a little fun...

I'm thinking they're probably fairly safe??

and yes to confirm, good brand proper spacers/adapters also no china stuff.

Still doesn't matter.

I would never trust a spacer with 1 extra stud attached. You are making something out of nothing. Power is transfered from your axle, to hub, and then thru the spacer onto the wheel.

Buying these spacers has no value other than for looks (because you want more common 5 lug rims).

It's your car but I do not trust these spacers.

Wouldn't they put more stress on the wheel bearings?
