who really knows how to shorten the auto shifter??

don't tell me - cut it off, because those who know, KNOW you can't just hack it off. there's a clear lever that's pressed to change from P all the way down to D1. i've only seen one chick on hp.com that did it, but her response was to cut it off. this is not what i was looking for in terms of info. if someone who really knows can tell me, please by all means, help a lady out.

i assume the entire surrounding shroud needs to be removed and diassemble from the bottom to get this piece out before cutting the metal sheath that holds the lever to your knob in the first place?

Well from what I know. If you have the stock shifter on it you can't shorten it. Theres a rod inside the metal shaft that moves up and down when you press the button. On top of the rod is a wheel that gets pressed down when you press the button on the shifter, whichs lets you shift. The other person you've talked to I assume has a aftermarket shift knob. Which to shorten it you cut the the whole thing down to the height you want with the knob on top. What you have to do in that case take a spiral pipe cutter and cut away at the metal shaft letting the rod in the center stick out enough for the button the on aftermarket shifter to be pressed down on. Note doing this will not allow you to put the stock shifter back on. Thats the only way I know how to do it, my friend did it to his civic.

your friend wouldn't have pics by any chance, would he?
yes, i understand the dynamic of the assembly so much as the lever inside with the wheel atop. so, from what i'm understanding, i'll just have to bite the bullet, cut the metal sheath down and look inside. i assume there's only a spring below the plastic center portion, right?

yes, there was an aftermarket knob as well. thanks for your reply.

I have an aftermarket knob on mine and I will check it when I get home. I have been wanting to do the same cause my knob sticks way up in the air! I will let you know tomorrow or tonight if I get a chance to get back online!

I got to lookin at it and I thought that the center post would pull out with out any troubles. I yanked like a prison inmate and couldn't get it to budge so I am going to cut the hollow post with a pipe cutter and see what is under there! I will take some pics but it might be awhile till I get to it!

Purely cosmetics, putting an aftermarket shift knob on make makes the shifter really looking. Looks better shorter.

obviously it's not for performance. why do people bother asking questions to questions? if i want to do it, there must be a reason deemed necessary to ME. that's why it's my question. <whew> had to say that in lieu of the numerous times i see people question others as if they wipe their asses with egyptian cotton toilet paper.

aesthtically speaking, if you had an automatic lude, you'd know why i want to shorten it. the thing is too damn long!

1. The outer cylinder is just a shell that covers the actual plunger that is pressed

What u do first is cut down the outer shell.....obviously not cutting right straight across....use a mini saw or something...i think 2 -2.5 inches

2.Then u cut down the plunger thingy but not to the same height as the outer cyle ofcourse..so u can switch gears...

And thats all there is to it

I always wondered why people with autos who change the shift knob don't cut the shifter downbecause its looks ghey being so high.

So anyways that should work
