When is it time for new shocks?

I'm still running around on my stock suspension after almost 140k miles. The ride is a bit stiff, but I guess I've come to expect that from a sports car. The car handles great, I don't really see the need for improvement. Only problem is these NY potholes are killing my electronic equipment (stereo's and CD changers). I hit a bump last night and now my 5 day old Kenwood Excelon deck won't play CD's. Although the suspension is old, it's not unbearable. How do you know when you should replace it? When the shock in my 86 Cutlass went the car was almost undrivable, the whole car was "floating" on the springs. I almost ended up in the east river in that thing. You would hit a bump and still be rocking back and forth a 1/4 mile down the road. Is the lude different because it's gas shocks? i.e. they don't lose pressure when they get old, they just get really stiff? At this point would going aftermaket and getting some good coilovers and maybe lowering the car improve the ride as far as potholes not killing stereo's on me or just make it worse?

Shocks tend to leak fluid when they have had enough, if they are still dry then chances are they are fine

In my old truck I used to have to was pretty easy to tell when the shocks where gone. The ride became really bouncy.

So my old, dry shocks are fine? Leak fluid? I thought ludes had nitrogen filled shocks from the factory? Is there fluid in there too?

I think that it would be time to change your shocks at 140k, especially with NY potholes.. I got almost 82k on my car and the shocks originals are going. It's still somewhat firm, but very noticable at higher speeds. Can't hold a turn as well. I think I am just like you, got used to it..and didn't think anything was wrong until I heard one of my shocks squeaking. I'm gonna order a set of Tein basic coilovers and I'm hoping that the difference will be night and day.

I'd be nothing short of amazed if my car handled any better. I know with upgraded suspension it shoud, but it handles so good now I can't see it riding any better. Shocks don't sqeak or make noise, the body seems to be making some noise now though, stuff's coming loose in the cabin sounds like. So what's the deal with TEIN's anyway? Better than a set of Ground Control's with Tokico Adjustable struts?

with a civic I had it had about 125k on the stock suspension, lowered.

I remember after putting on some tokico blues. It felt like a luxury car.
