wheel speed sensor

where is it, what does it look like, and how do i know if it has gone bad?

I am asking because my rear passenger side wheel has a horrible whine coming from it when i back up and a small whine during normal driving and i was told it could be the wheel speed sensor but i am open to other suggestions as well. My car is outside up on jacks as i type so i am hoping for some quick replies.

Thanks

Sounds more like a wheel bearing to me. If the car is still in the air, try spinning the wheel by hand and listen for a sort of humming noise, that is 9 times out of 10 a dying bearing.

The bearing needs to be replaced.

Like jsmooney said it's a little thingy with a wire attached to it I believe it's the only thing with a wire in that area so it shouldn't be hard to find.

To change a front wheel bearing you need a press. I think the rear you can just unbolt the bearing/hub assembly and change it. Should be doable at home.

flick it with your index finger and see if it makes a beepy noise.....if it does, then somethings wrong because it doesn't do that. use the jumper wire on the ECU under the dash next to your radio by the carpet on the driver's side....is there a CEL?
