What's wrong with this prelude????

Ok, my buddies 93 SI with 190,000 miles has been burning about a quart and half of oil a week. We just did a compression check and it ran 210 all the way across, any suggestions as to what could be wrong with this thing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure its burning the oil not leaking it?

My 90 Accord had a serious oil problem as well. It turned out to have a 2" crack in the oil pan. It wouldn't drip until enough pressure was built-up in the pan to actually open the crack.

That's probably not an issue w/ your friend's car, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

x2 def need to know. looking at your exhaust when the car is running would be the fastest way to tell.

If it is burning oil start out with the easy stuff, valve cover gasket kit and any other seals/gaskets you can get to easily.

It's definitely burning oil, though I guess that doesn't guarantee it's not also leaking it.

He said the smoke is pretty thick and is a greyish white. He said the only oil on the motor is oil he spilled while adding it, as far as he knows.

So, would you guys suggest replacing the head gasket? If that's not it, the oil control ring requires a rebuild, correct?

I hope for his sake, it's the headgasket. But unless there are anymore suggested possibilities, thanks for all the help everyone!

If you have bad valve seals, the car will usually only smoke immediately upon startup after it has been sitting a while (at least a couple hours). It will usually blow bluish smoke for a minute or two, then quit. If it smokes more than that or after it's been running a while, it's probably something else.

I vote valve seals. If theyre bad enough itll smoke the whole time. Wont show up on a compression test either. Highly doubt its a single bad ring after 190k miles. A leakdown test will tell you if you have a bad ring tho.
