What the heck!!! Any one with a 4th gen VTEC please!!

Okay guys, I just raced my buddy who has a 5th gen lude with an N1 cat back exhaust and dc headers. I have a home made cold air intake and a crush bent 2.5" cat back exhaust and a dinan stage 2 chip. Of the line I raped him and I was almost 2 cars ahead...but once I got to the beginning of 3rd, he drastically pulled beside me. At about a 1/4 mile I was ahead but only by about 1/2 a car or so!!! I'm wondering, is it my air intake or is it just that the 3rd gear in the 5th gens are just damn strong?? I mean he really pulled up beside me! I was shocked!! any insight would be great! Thanks

you raped him......delightful expression...perhaps your mate carries less weight than u as he probably shags more, therefore gaining more speed.

You say he has a header and you don't right? that could be it... Besides 1/2 a car length isn't that bad. The cars seem to be pretty damn even with each other, so maybe it's your driving

Can't win em all...

EDIT: didnt realize that the 5th gen didnt have an intake.... So, ya, it seems like a tight race.

What RPM are you shifting at? I have a friend with a 5th gen that always beats me...but he shifts at fuel cut. I personally dont beat my engine up that bad(except for special occasions )

the 4th gen vtec and 5th gen vtec are almost the same speed.. if you look at book time, they are only off by maye a few tenths of a second... a simple shifting your car too early or late could determine who wins and who looses... as for your mods, i don't think ur homemade cold air really does much, and as for your exhaust piping, if the pipe is dented in and crushed like you mentioned, that puts restriction on your car. You might even be loosing power because of that... as for the dc header and exhaust on your friend's car, that is all mid-high end power which is probably how he pulled up to u in 3rd gear and hung with you.

Do you know what your Dinan ECU does? I'm not sure about the "stages", but I've heard that a Dinan ECU will ONLY raise your RPM/fuel cut off, nothing else. Maybe you're revving it higher and not making any power up there, just wasting time and gas. These 2 cars are almost dead even. But he should have the upper hand, probably due to the newer/less beaten engine, better exhaust and the header. Your crush bent exhaust might be why you're not pulling as hard at higher speeds. And also your home made intake should restrict your air flow at higher RPMs...

well, if you really raped him down low, either the dinan chip is killing you

or you gotta learn to handle the car.

The cars do turn in about equal 1/4 miles but for those who have raced at the track the launch mostly determines how well you do. I think if you really got him good off the line like you said then I don't think you should have lost. What did you shift at?

Okay, I don't doubt my driving capabilities at all. I was just wondering if anyone else had raced any other 5th gens and if they noticed anything about the 5th gens 3rd gear. It's just that I've raced other 5th gens and the turn out was at least a 3 car victory. I don't know if it was a ss or what though. Anyway, I was shifting at about 8200or 8300 and it was power shifting. Like I said, I don't think it's my driving....besides, when I'm in third gear and when he's in third, I don't think theres much to screw up when all ur doing is mashing on the gas pedal. Oh yah, one more thing, the difference in hp is about 10 is it not? How are the 5th gens squeezing out more hp?

What??? My advice: get rid of the Dinan ECU or chip, what ever. Then race again... There should be no reason for you to shift past 8k. You'll only hurt your engine and lose power and time. What is your fuel cut off on the Dinan do you know? I'm just wondering.

Why are you shifting so late? You don't have a good intake, header or exhaust so after 6,800 power starts dropping and you are going slower. In 1st and 2nd I shift at 7,900 rpm, 3rd and 4th at about red line because that is when I will get more usable torque which is required for these higher gears. My VTEC does have i/h/e and pullies. I think 5th gen have shorter 3rd gear than 4th gen.
