What have you done to improve shifter feel?

Hey guys,

I recently installed the Forbidden Short Shifter on my 4th Gen and I think it's a great upgrade, well worth the money. The problem is that the 4th Gen shifter mechanism is still a cable system and it still does not feel that smooth mainly due to the side to side play.

Has anyone done anything to improve the shifter feel besides the Forbidden Short Shifter?

Thanks.

I took out the 4 rubber bushings that hold the shifter plate to the chassis. I replaced them with metal washers. Shifting feel is MUCH better.

Oh, I have the Forbidden shifter, too.

hmm never thought about doing that..
would there really be any disadvantages of changing to metal washers?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am still trying to figure out how this would help with the side to side play of the shifter mechanism though.

i run 4th gen cables in my 5th gen and it is a smoother and shorter shift, all a short shifter will do is stretch your cables and cause them to break. TRUST ME!!!

Also i agree, replace rubber bushing with metal washers.

Energy suspension makes shifter bushings that i'd say are better than a stack of washers...

I added a stack of washers too....

you can also Ziptie the cables through the engine compartment.

The forbidden shifter in my 4th gen was one of my very first mods. It is set on the shortest throw and I get little to no side to side movement. In fact i think 2nd gear is the only one I can shift side to side but I avoid doing that. Is it true I am stretching the cables just by using this part?

I wouldn't mind a crisper feel though. Are the energy suspension brand shifter bushings that great? I realize the rubber adds a bit of play but as I recall when bolted down the shifter plate felt quite study with oem bushings. What part of the 'feel' will change. Also, what is this zip tieing I've been hearing about?

Basically the shifter bushings that you're gonna want to replace are in the engine bay, right above the transaxle.. if you're looking at the engine from the front, they'll be to the passenger side rear, right behind the engine itself.. you'll see the shift linkage.

Well if there is play in the shifter mechanism, changing the lever will not solve the problem. The lever is attached to other parts like the links which could be worn, so if the links are not as solid as they should be I don't think the short shifter can help with this. Now don't get me wrong, I love my Forbidden Short Shifter, however those of us who have side play may have some worn out parts that are part of the shift mechanism.

Just so I understand this correctly. The shifter links that are in the engine bay should be replaced with metal washers? Or just replaced by new OEM links?

Another thing I would like to mention is that my shifter had side play BEFORE I installed my Forbidden Short Shifter, even with the OEM shift lever.
