What gives JDM H22s the extra power? What makes them illegal for emissions?

As the title says, what gives the JDM h22s that extra few horses? Is it just the slightly raised compression, or anything else?

Also what makes them illegal for emissions? Is it also the slightly raised compression, or something else?

yes it is the emissions and compression, the jdm's compression, in some states, have diff cams and therefore release more emssions and at diff ratios

The jdm h22a has a slightly higher compression, and the cam shafts are also better. For the Type S, it has better internals all around... The jdm ECU also has no speed or redline govenor. Plus its OBD1.

I think there's a law in Japan so all production cars are toped out at 180km/h about 110MPH, kinda like the 280PS law....

the actual emissions tests usually pass. though the emission levels might differ they still are within federal laws, with a cat of course.

however, in some states you can't pass a visual since it's not a ud production motor. lots of different stories on this though.

the jdm ecu's do have a redline fuel cut and governor. all honda jdm ecu's i believe have a 110-115mph cut-out.

What makes them illegal is that you're putting in an engine that wasn't approved by US regulations. As stated, on an older car you can probably easily pass the sniffer.

I passed emissions with my JDM h22a but I used a USDM p13 with mines. I'm not sure if it could pass with a JDM p13 but I'm guessing it should. We don't have visual inspections here so I'm not sure about passing that with a JDM h22a. And yes there is a speed govener on the JDM p13. Mines tops out at 118mph.

Im in cali. The government here are a bunch of pollution Nazis... This is my concern.

This is why I am wondering what I can do to pass smog with a JDM H22a, I can always undo it after I pass smog with the new motor.

I take it you have a VTEC model, and not just a vtec swap, right?

Is it possible to bypass the ECU governors on JDH H22A's??
I have one installed on my 'lude and have taken her upto 180 km/h but not past that due to factory rims, tires. Topping out @ 180 w/ a JDM kinda sucks....
